Why can’t I live in a country that ‘minds its own business’ and doesn’t have 800 overseas military bases around the world and wasted over $6 trillion dollars - fighting a 20 year war ‘against terror’ and eventually became ‘a war of terror.’ Endless wars equals endless profits for our military industrial complex.

"The U.S. even controls their military." That's really not the case. The ROK military is only nominally under the US-UN command in any normal day to day operations. US military didn't order or impede other interventions by ROK military in local politics over the years... The US-UN command is a legacy of the Korean War when US military commanders could issue direct orders to ROK units in combat vs. the Communists...

So these countries elites are compromised and bought but the people are resisting. Pres Yong(YSY) won his presidency with the slimmest of majority but lost to the Opposition in the Korean Legislative Body(KLB). Thereafter he has openly displayed his pro-American and anti-China stance. Increasingly the Korean people perceived him to be a puppet of the US and this culminated in his superb performance singing American pie. Besides numerous extremely bad domestic policies, his popularity also took a hit when he sent arms to support Ukraine, provoked the North Korean and worst of all, normalized relationship with Japan including forming a tripartite alliance with the US and Japan to counter China. Japan colonized Korea for about 150 years and it was brutal....and up till today the Japanese was never remorseful of the WWII crimes it committed not only in Korea but also China and South East Asia...There is also a lot bad blood between the Korean and Japanese....Just ask any Korean about the Japanese and you will know why.... Consequently, his popularity plummeted to about 15%. He was not able to govern and the Opposition KLB had no choice but to remove him from office. That was why he took the gamble and resorted become a dictator.... It is only a matter of time before the same scenario will play out in the Philippines by Marcos....

Contrary to other narratives claiming Putin is "isolated," the Russian president confidently states that markets around the world filled in for European markets that have fled, only hurting West's own economies. Zelensky's ultimatum is too weak. He threatens that Russia will surely win if Ukraine is not given full NATO membership. That's not much of a threat because everyone already knows that Russia will win, and all the jostling now is about the details and consequences of that. What Zelensky should do is to give NATO the ultimatum that unless Ukraine becomes a member real fast, Ukraine will join the Russian Federation and BRICS, and become one of the Russian states. Zelensky would not be ignored anymore.
@GreenIsland385 күн бұрын
Ukraine joining BRICS would be a very sensible and smart move. That would definately be their fastest way to getting their country rebuilt and back on the road to a peacfull prosperous life. If they wait for the west to help rebuild, they will likely be in for a long wait.

The closest thing to the South Korea incident that comes to mind: the Russian constitutional crisis of 1993, with the distinction that the parliamentary majority prevailed on this occasion. Obviously, the military leadership should not have had any predetermined position on such decree. If politicians disagree, then the Supreme Court will figure out what direction to take.

I've always thought it wrong that in Britain former military officers can stand and be elected to Parliament. There should always be a clear separation between civil and military roles.
@JohnJohnson-n3n5 күн бұрын
It used to be in Britain that serving officers were often MPs up until 1975: The House of Commons Disqualification Act 1975 outlaws the holders of various positions from being MPs. These include civil servants, regular police officers (but not special constables), regular members of the armed forces (but not reservists), and some judges.

@@user-iu5vc5ki8p Not about the texture of that party. It's about the credibility of a civil democracy if too military types hold high political office.
