10 RCWA volunteers beat the Sacramento heat and ventured to South Lake Tahoe for an amazing cleanup in two fantastic locations. Our very own RCWA Badger, Randy, collaborated with a local conservancy and led the way to the hidden locations for our cleanup. Because the cleanup was shared in the local news “South Tahoe Now”, two Tahoe volunteers showed up to help, Robyn and Bev!
We started off at Johnson Meadow, meeting two representatives of Tahoe Resource Conservation District (TRCD), Celeste and Andrew. They led us to several abandoned encampment locations in this protected area and provided trash bags and wheelbarrows for our use. We made quick work of these areas, creating a large pile of trash. We then hauled it all out via a long and bumpy trail to their truck where it was loaded and hauled to the dump. 💪
Once finished, we caravanned to the second stop, Trout Creek and a popular Indian Grinding Rock, for a picnic lunch. We intended to continue our trash finding adventures after lunch, however, Mother Nature had a different plan. It began to sprinkle and lightly rain, encouraging some of the group to depart. The remaining stragglers braved the drops only to encounter a heavy downpour and lightening storm! Running for cover, soaked and surprised, we eagerly waited for the rain storm to let up.
Once the rains subsided, three remaining volunteers ventured out to a separate section of meadow to discover and remove additional abandoned and dumped trash. Another large pile was made and the Clean Tahoe Program graciously picked it up!
It was a wonderful adventure that took us to hidden gems among the meadows and floodplains of the Upper Truckee River. Thank you, Randy, TRCD, Clean Tahoe, and all the great volunteers!
Volunteers Make It Happen! 💚
