The part where Cartman is travelling through time, with the music and everything, is a homage to the Buck Rogers in the 25th Century show from the 80's. I loved that show when I was a kid!

PlayStation 2 was the best console for it's time. I have nostalgia for the N64 and the SNES, but the PS2 was a game changer. It played DvDs, had an internet connection, played PS1 games, and had great specs. The leap from the N64 to the PS2 was so massive, that I have to give it to the PS2.

I hear you, and I raise you the Dreamcast. That console could have done much more. So many great games on it, but it didn't get the 3rd party support from devs to put out enough games to survive. PS2 is the winner by sheer volume of games. So many games during its life, we got lots of greats.

South Park has poked fun at every major religion, and this was like their little jab at atheism. I like that literally no one is safe from their satire. Nor should anyone or anything be exempt. Trey has said in an interview they're not religious or atheist, that it's "complicated".
@RmnGnzlz

Pretty much. In the end Atheism is also based on faith since you literally can't prove something that doesn't abide by our metaphysical rules exits or doesn't. The only real answer is to realize anybody that preaches religion or atheism is trying to get something from someone and you should just not care and die so you don't have to listen to those people anymore.

actually it isn't different from how it's used, in his book the selfish gene he points out how viral ideas can be memes, and that within culture they can even change meaning and still be relevant. and that's basically what modern memes and meme-culture are.
@nooneofconsequence1251
@nooneofconsequence1251 Жыл бұрын
it's totally different from how it is currently used. The original idea of a meme was that cultural ideas, norms, values etc can be transmitted generation to generation the same way that genes are, and evolve in similar ways, too, mutating each time it is passed from person to person, with more resilient traits, the aspects of the idea that make it more appealing or more resistant to refutation or dismissal, like dominant genes, slowly becoming more prevalent across a population. This is how, for example, any major religion that has been around long enough has developed multiple defense mechanisms to deflect any criticisms or doubts... ideas like... "my religion makes no sense because God works in mysterious ways"... or .. "doubt is a sin, faith is a virtue, if I ask for evidence to support my claims I'm not being a good Christian." .... or... "God in these stories sure does sounds like an evil SOB, but, let's trust that his ways are higher tha ours and that he has a plan" ... or.. "apostasy, blasphemy, and heresy are punishable by death." etc. and it works the same for other ideas like the idea that monogamy and marriage is somehow normal or desirable. This was a brilliant idea. I had the same idea myself, independently, many years later, and am still mad at Dawkins for coming up with it and coining a term to describe it 3 years before I was even born. It's so hard to be original... On the other hand what do people today think a meme is? If you asked the average person they would tell you that a meme is a still image taken from a TV show or movie that someone has put funny words on and posted on Facebook... not really the same thing.... even if there are superficial similarities in how they are transmitted and changed a little bit person to person (sometimes). Still... a shameful and tragic bastrardization of a remarkably elegant and important concept.

The demand for Wii greatly exceeded availability for months. They sold completely out early on the first day. For months after that when a store got a shipment it was gone within hours. It typically took months to get a Wii if you weren't in line on the first day, unless you bought one from a place like eBay for several times the retail price. I wasn't willing to camp out overnight at a store to get one, but managed to get one the first day anyway. I got up about a couple hours before the stores opened and drove around to the various stores just to see how big the lines were. Best Buy, Target, GameStop, Walmart, all the places I'd read about the expected long lines. Then I wondered if Kmart also had them--no one ever mentioned Kmart in their articles about getting a Wii. I'm on the west side of the US, and called up a Kmart on the east side of the US where the Kmarts were already opened and asked them about Wii. They said they had had a few but they were sold out. So now I knew that Kmart was a Wii retailer, and drove to my local Kmart. There were two people in line. So I joined the line. A few others joined after me. About 15 minutes before the store opened someone came out to tell us they only had two. But one of the people ahead of me said they were just there with their friend and were not going to buy one themselves, which meant that I would get the last one. The guy behind me in line looked like he was getting ready to try to rush in ahead of me when the doors opened, but the Kmart employee told us she had already noted our positions in line and that the Wiis were going to the person ahead of me and myself. Everyone else went home and I got my day one Wii.

I remember one video on KZbin that showcased just how long the lines were to just play on the Wii vs PlayStation console (can't remember which number. NOT the first one though). It looked like it was in a convention going on, but after looking at the line for the Wii goes over to the PlayStation line. Very short in comparison to Wii lol. My younger brother got a Wii at some point from our mom, but I know for a fact my mom wasn't about to stand in line for hours on end to get one. She loves us and all, but not that damn much 😆!

Mr./Mrs. Garrison is great character because not suppose to really represent any group. Just a really terrible selfish person that will constantly switch beliefs and ideas as long as its suits him best and take it to the extreme. As pointed out at end this pretty much what Matt and Trey are making fun of. People that think if world had no religion or was only 1 religion would still probably find a way to have conflict with each other even if its something dumb. Fairly odd parents had similar episode about this concept and was pretty good. The MC wishes everyone was grey blob that looked exactly same so his neighbors wouldn't bully him anymore for his bad teeth. But of course they are still bullies and claim be more grey and blob like than anyone else.

@83gemm
@83gemm Жыл бұрын
@@corruptangel6793 That’s a really hard question to answer, because it’s not something I decided. To me, there isn’t a “why.” I can summarize how I came to these conclusions, if you like. I was raised going to church with my mom. My dad never attended, but he knew a lot of stories about Jesus and he often told them to me. I believed entirely as a kid. It was comforting. My little brother used to talk to Jesus on his toy phone and tell him about his day. We have a video of my brother at about three talking into the toy phone and saying, “But how are YOU, Jesus?” It’s adorable. Then we got a new pastor who was more fire and brimstone than our sweet natured old pastor. The new pastor’s wife taught my Sunday school class. She told us about a play she went to see where a young family died and were waiting to see who got into heaven. She told us how nice these people looked, man and wife and little baby. Then an angel came and took the baby from their arms and pointed for the man and wife to go to Hell. She described how bitterly the mother screamed because she would spend eternity without her baby. I was like 8 or 9. She told us that we had to pray every night because we never knew if we would die in our sleep. And if we woke up in the night, we had to pray again before we went back to sleep. Because if we died unclean, we’d go to Hell. She said, “Imagine going to sleep in your nice warm bed and waking up in Hell.” This pretty much traumatized me and I slept clutching my Bible. Mom was a little slow to realize how crazy our teachings had become, but when I was ten she asked if we still wanted to go to church. We said no. Mom and Dad talked to us very casually about how the lady shouldn’t have said those things and worked subtly to help us get over it. But part of me never really did. So that was the end of me going to church, but I still believed in Heaven and Hell and that God was out there. I was just trying to reconcile which version of teachings I agreed with. I learned about the Council of Nicea and how men picked which gospels to use. So for a long time I kind of had my own version of religion, accepting that any organized religion was corrupted by human agenda and interference. I went to a small high school that was VERY Christian. One day, a new kid arrived and I learned the word “atheist” when he proudly announced he was one. He and the rest of the class got in an argument about the Big Bang in science class. One of the girls pulled a Bible FROM HER PURSE and waved it at him. The argument continued into the next class and I finally spoke up. I said, “Couldn’t it be that you’re both right and God made the Big Bang happen?” Neither side agreed to this, but my history teacher told me after class that he liked my argument. When I was in my twenties, a lot of things happened. I met a cute boy who was “spiritual, but not religious,” I read more, I watched Religilous, I discovered George Carlin, and the biggest influence was that my dad let slip that he didn’t believe in an afterlife. I was gutted. I had never really considered that there was no afterlife. It was so ingrained that even when I questioned everything else, that never occurred to me. Took me a long time to really ask myself what I really thought about it. Then I watched a show about memory. There were all these disorders people had that caused their brain to malfunction and cause memory issues. I recall one man who couldn’t recognize faces. For whatever reason, that pushed me over the edge of my questioning. What we call a soul is really just wiring in our brains storing the memories of our lives. If the brain can lose that while we are alive, why would it continue after death? I was also very frustrated with how religion was used in politics. I had a lot of gay friends and I got so sick of the Leviticus quote. I started reading the Bible so I could debate with these people and when I saw the other sins listed on the SAME PAGE as “thou shalt not lie with mankind,” one, I was pretty much done. Went through my hating religious people phase, but over time I met some truly good people whose faith enhances their lives and I got over my anger. Then I got really into history and learned how the different religions developed and why. It started to make sense to me that people living short, scary lives needed an afterlife to look forward to and that conmen jumped on that to create social doctrines to control people. Then if something bad happened, those conmen could say, “Well, that group upset God and He is punishing all of us. That’s why the bad thing happened. I didn’t lie; it’s the fault of Them.” There were lots of other little moments and influences, but this is pretty long! I went from finding comfort in faith, to fearing it, to questioning, to observing, to concluding. Organized religions are lies. There is no evidence of an afterlife; in fact there is evidence against it. Is there a bigger being that we would call a god? Maybe, but He doesn’t care if little Billy passes his spelling test and He definitely isn’t casting him into pits of fire for not praying before bed. I think it might turn out we are like cells and what we consider the vast unexplored universe is part of a being that isn’t even aware of us. But I don’t necessarily BELIEVE that. It’s just on my list of possibilities. But I would never try to take someone’s faith from them or argue to change their minds (unless they are using religious doctrine as a weapon; then all bets are off). My dad doesn’t believe in an afterlife, but my mom does. I think it’s a frail belief, so I don’t press her. But she’s the last living person of her family (both parents gone and four siblings). If it helps her function to think she will see them again, it’s none of my business. Her little sister died while on the phone with her and I know it hurts her that their last conversation was cut short so brutally. If that sadness is quelled by thinking they can pick up where they left off in Heaven, I think that’s a good thing. As I said way back at the start, there isn’t a “why” that can be easily given. I can just take you through the steps I went through.

@83gemm that's actually somewhat similar to my situation. I didn't go to overly religious schools or anything like that, mostly the crazy religious people. What tore a hole in my faith and began my line of questioning was my dad. In my case, my dad was the pastor, and he was an abusive asshole who brought me to the very edge of suicide and patricide. If it wasn't for my dog, then I most likely wouldn't be here right now. Though I'm sure a religious person would say God sent the dog. Regardless, yeah, he didn't shine a very nice light on the religion. It drove me away, and that's when I began to look at things more cynically and critically. Initially, and to a certain extent, even now, I use that logic to try and defend Christianity. So much so that my mom (who is still religious to this day and went through her own major journey) suggested I become a Christian scientist, lol For example, your comment about the big bang. I had a similar idea since it's literally just "let there be light" and is otherwise impossible the way scientists believe it happened. I still try to believe in the soul and desperately cling to various other things to give existance meaning. So, I still dip my toes in religion, but I also find infinitely more comfort in the idea that nothing comes after death rather than the idea that I'd be spending an eternity in one hell or another for happening to choose the wrong religion. All that said, I asked because, well, I've come to the understanding that athiesm isn't a thing. There is only religion and nihilism. That's something these two episodes of South Park actually highlighted with the people in the future. All their athiesm did was turn science into their new God. When I saw your comment and how you had gone through a journey to come to your conclusion, and you don't like associating with many other athiests, I want to see if you could challenging my understanding of athiesm. So ultimately, now that I have some idea of your story and how you came to your conclusions that God(s) aren't real, I gotta ask: What DO you believe in?

@@corruptangel6793 I believe we all get one life and we should strike a balance of enjoying ourselves while being kind to other living things. We are lucky the dice rolled in our favor to even be born in the first place. I believe that being dead will be like the time before I was born. I believe there is a lot about the universe we haven’t discovered yet and as those discoveries are made, I’m in a position to adapt my understanding of life, the universe, and everything (Douglas Adams nod there) without needing it to match up with a document written by other humans. I never buy new technology as soon as it comes out. Especially consoles. One reason being, most launch titles aren't the greatest, wait some time after when the price is reduced and the game options are more. Another reason is there may be bugs with it that would be fixed at a later time via updates available.

The greatest console ever created... Hmm. The most fun I've ever had on games in general, outside of growing up on an NES, would have to be the Gamecube. There weren't many games on it, but it had Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 4 and Smash Bros. Melee and F-Zero GX. The Dark Souls series, Bloodborne, Sekiro and Elden Ring are pretty much the only games today that really drive that same level of serotonin for me, as was during the Gamecube years.

The PS2 IS the best console of all time. The library is the largest of any of its contemporaries, with some of the best exclusives and time exclusives. The hardware was inexpensive but powerful and hit both its stride and peak before the other 3rd gen consoles. The controller design is basically still used today almost unchanged. Its market share was unreal in scope. I'm a Nintendo guy, and though I'd put the SNES in a kinda close second, I don't think there's any real competition for first place.
