The opening scene where the train is exiting the street-running is Michigan Ave. There was a stop right where you were standing until at least the late 1970's.

@jonrev They only run the bi-level cars on weekdays for the most part, and moreso for weekday rush hour runs. And from what I've heard, they only run those between Carroll Ave(Mich City) and Chicago.

I am compiling a video of commuter rail systems in the United States: I have not had a chance to film this system and was wondering if I could use 30 seconds of your footage? I would be more than happy to list your channel as credits under the description once I put out the video

Street running is in Australia to, at least in one place I've seen. A few places in the US also still have street running.The IC railroad had double decker EUM's in the 1980's.I think some are still in service on Metra but they may have been replaced by these newer ones here. Metra also brought their own version of them. Also the Chicago area has had double decker commuter trains since the late 50's as push pull trains pulled by diesels, so that's about 63 years total.

Metropolitan Sydney and ajacent cities are the only rail links using doube deakers. Victoria tried one some years back but it could not fit in with the other single deckers and was scrapped. Thanks for the swaps. If you want a piece of paradine, come live in Sutherland Shire at southern end of this huge city. Just don't try and drive anywhere anytime quickly !

I like how the South Shore trains run right in the middle of streets in front of people's houses. If anything keeps me up at night I'd rather it be one of these than loud neighbors. It'd give me a reason to railfan more often. Is this the only city where it runs on the streets?
@corpsmaster7 жыл бұрын
Yes, this isn't the only city it street runs on. It runs next to a major highway and there are plenty of places to rail fan this railroad.

I live along the South Shore near the beautiful Hudson Lake stop. Sitting at Monroe's Crossing (a dinner) is the easiest and best way to railfan this.

In the early 20th century they ran streetcars or trains with one to two cars. They never moved to entirely dedicated tracks so now they run full length trains on the streets.

Trains running in the main road ? Looks weird! In Sydney, Australia, we have had double decker trains for over 50 years. We are just renewing the second generation stainless steel non air conditioned with Waratah trains. Although these don't run through where I took video, the intercity OSCAR train is shown. Also couple of DE hauled coal trains for variety ! CITYRAIL Sydney- NEW 4,400 HP Class CEY DE Locos at Mortdale Station 14/ 8/ 2013 watch?v=xx-UeqDIuO0

So which came first here the railroad or town?

Definitely Town. However the South Shore, while having always been an interurban, started with Tram cars, therefore a lot of street running was far more practical.

...And someone thought it was a good idea to have a commuter rail line go down a street? I'm mind boggled right now.
@Wingnutcaseman9 жыл бұрын
+DrSurprise The South Shore Line originated as an interurban which typically ran on streets in cities and towns and on private right of way in open areas. Today South Shore is a railroad but some interurban vestiges remain including this stretch of street running. Plans to eliminate reroute this section off the street have been floated for years but so far to no avail.
@MrWolfSnack9 жыл бұрын
+DrSurprise In addition to Wingnut's comments, freight lines ran through the middle of old towns like this since the 1800's. This line was always owned and run by The Shore.
@TheChicagoL8 жыл бұрын
Why remove it? The residents seem to be, not only used to it's operation, but pretty content with it. I mean really, where else can you just step outside your house and board a heavy rail commuter train, at street level, practically right outside your front door? Hey, as they say: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
@DrSurprise8 жыл бұрын
TheChicagoL True. I'm not saying it's a bad idea. I too would be pretty caught on by the idea of having a train outside my house. Would make my life slightly easier.
