I was born in Southampton and have always wondered why all those walls and the Bargate have survived, whereas Winchester only has the West Gate.

Did the canal run directly under God's Tower?

Yes and was built to control the sluice gate.

@@southamptononvideo2439 On an old map, I remember once seeing the canal ran the length of Queensway, left and up across the southern-most edge of Houndwell Park and across the town precinct roughly between Primark and Boots until it reached the old waterfront. I wonder if it's still at all intact.
