Ultramarathons are run in extreme cold and extreme hot every year. The difference is those are known to be extreme so the runners come prepared. This race wasn't expected to be extreme in weather. For those who are saying the organizers were negligent and could have avoided this, i just want to point out in the description, they say the cold weather was unexpected, and that the forecast didn't mention it. It was an unexpected weather event, they couldn't have seen it coming, at least not before the race started. It should also be noted that the track seem to be on mountain terrain, which means A) they can't just get emergency vehicles to exactly where people were, except for helicopters. And B) even if they did decide to cancel the event once it got cold, it would be reasonably difficult to make contact with nearly 200 people in a timely manner (first you got to get ahead of everyone, which is difficult as you can't just track their every step with satellites, then you got to make all of them make it to you and dont drop before they get to you. Then there's getting them all OFF the mountain safely) Now I know it's easy to vilify the organizers because of "corporate greed", but try to actually do some research and not just assume the worse pf people when your only source is a 3 minute video. To be fair, I only watch the video myself so far, but I'm at least not generalizing people and thinking the worse of them. If someone can tell me of an article that proves the organizers overlook something, provide me the link and I'll take this all back. But even if that was the case, y'all too quick to judge.

This freeze in China is remarkably similar to, but much later in the season than, the record "hard" freeze of Texas, USA''s February 11 through February 20, 2021 one. That freeze killed about 150 persons and shut down the Texas' power grid for a week. The temperature difference between the Arctic Polar Vortex and middle latitudes is decreasing because the Arctic is warming twice as fast as middle latitudes. As the Northern Jet Stream slows and loses energy, it wobbles, and even breaks up and meanders like a slowing top. It then drifts southward dragging fridged Arctic air with it into lower latitudes, even south into Mexico. I was in Laredo, Texas, about one week afer the freeze and it had killed "fan palms" (Washingtonias) that were old when I first visited there in 1962. It also turned the South Texas winter crop into mush. Flooding destroyed two Chinese crops (on was a replant) in a row last year forcing the government to buy record amounts of grain from the USA and India. This freeze in China likely destrroyed crops too. We are in the midst of abrupt, irreversable, climate change and Earth's 8th mass extinction and it includes us. old geologist
