Situated in the Eastern Himalayas, the kingdom of Bhutan has become synonymous with serenity and spirituality. People outside Bhutan have given the country many names, such as “happiest country in the world” or “last Shangri-la”. Bhutan authorities have not focused on measuring economic growth with an index like gross domestic product (GDP), choosing instead tallying Gross National Happiness (GNH) to highlight the importance of sustainability, well-being and culture. In this episode of Eat Drink Asia, Post reporter Lisa Cam visits Bhutan to learn how this philosophy translates into everyday life, and finds out how locals are preserving and promoting their traditional culture through food.

@@USSArizona-hi8qo Yes, my pastor friend lives across the border in India. He goes over the border into Bhutan sometimes, and tells me what is going on there. . We are Seventh-day Adventists, but a couple of years ago, some other church had a baptism and a video of it was posted to the internet. A few days later govt. officials came to that newly baptized person't house and turned off their electricity for one year for becoming Christian. . My friend also tells me that many young Bhutanese emigrate to India because there are no jobs in Bhutan. . He has also told me that govt. workers come around to peoples' homes in Bhutan and check to make sure that they have a Buddhist idol in their home. . The king is ruthless, so when the people are asked if they are "happy", of course they respond positively. . It is common knowledge that North Korea is even "happier"!

Been to Bhutan over ten times, the claims of “World’s Happiest Country” is definitely over rated. This marketing campaign has been a success and fits the romantic ideas of the people about the Himalayan Kingdom, but if you know this country better, then you know it is lies. Since most of the businesses are monopolize by the Royalties, there are very little opportunities for the general population, so lots of young generation had to flee to Australia to look for jobs in the name of study, those could not afford to go abroad are surrounded by drugs which came easily across the border from India.

My sister visited Bhutan a few days ago and she said that it's the most peaceful and lovely place she's ever been to. The places are very clean and their dresses are impressive. They always have social works and she send me a few photos of the places and I might say it looked very peaceful and she bought some snacks from there as well. Someday when I grow up I would like to visit it as well. Such a lovely place.

The vibe you get when entering Bhutan is different. U get some kind of serene and peaceful vibe unlike in other countries. And this feeling u get not only in the rural areas but even in the cities. Everyone says theres some kind of peaceful vibe in this country. U get to life in a slow pace and live in a natural calming environment unlike the hectic stessful life in many other countries. Its rare and preciously unique feeling and experience that you get.

Girl from Bhutan here!! I’m not sure what metrics are being used to label Bhutan as “the happiest country” but it’s honestly bogus. It’s nice to live in Bhutan but only if you are wealthy because the general population only has access to low quality goods, healthcare, schooling, and commodities.
