Hello, and welcome back to a long overdue on my channel, back at last!
From this video, I am pleased to announce higher-quality recording (thanks to my lovely new camera), which should hopefully include better stabilisation in most new videos. I am also pleased to say that editing will also be better (thanks to my lovely new computer), so expect to see an overall increase in quality on the channel from now! :)
For this train trip report, I will be travelling on Southeastern Highspeed from London St Pancras to Dover Priory. The train used is a Class 395 EMU (electric multiple unit), built by Hitachi at Kasado Factory, in Japan as part of their AT300 family. The trains are nicknamed as 'Javelin', thanks to their use on Olympic Javelin Shuttle trains, back during the London 2012 Olympics. This Olympic theme is further backed up by each unit being named after a British Olympian.
The route for this journey is London St Pancras International to Stratford International, Ebbsfleet International, Ashford International via HS1 (Highspeed 1), before branching off and calling at Folkestone West, Folkestone Central, and finally Dover Priory - the final terminal station. This is a high-speed train, and completes the journey in far less time (about one hour) than the regular classic routes take (about two hours).
Capable of 140mph, the trains are not quite true high-speed, but still proudly take claim to being the fastest domestic train in the UK. Interestingly, these aren't proper long-distance trains, instead serving as some sort of high-speed commuter train, lacking many bells and whistles that you would expect. It's basically a faster equivalent to a Class 375 (for example). I also found it of note that these Hitachi trains are much better than other trains from the company, such as the Class 800, Class 801, and Class 802. I don't understand how that could be possible, but they are better in every single way.
Hope you enjoy the video, and look out for weekly uploads in the future!

Hello there, worked for Hitachi on some of their overseas projects, please forgive my poor English. You see, what common travellers comment on the trains that we built, or any other rolling stock company built, is not even remotely affected by us. What we care about (or basically what our jobs are) is the riding quality of bogies, how much vertical and lateral vibration there would be within the carriage, how much hunting movement there would be on high-speed runnings, how stiff the dampers are set, how stiff the air suspension is set, the structural stress on the frame and running gear, underfloor heat management, electromagnetic insulation, traction equipment, etc, etc, all under normal wear and tear limits on a relatively well-maintained track. The one thing that travellers care, and that we can affect, is insulation, and I promise you that we always have been trying to improve on those numbers to make the cabin as quiet and as insulated as possible. And the seats, interior, those sort of things, are not our business. Those are determined by the train operating company or DfT in the case of the IEP batch. The carpeting, seating, upholstery, the mounting of the interior panels, the material of those panels, illumination arrangements, are not part of our business. We just design a blank canvas for the interior design group that TOC or DfT employed to care about. That might explain why you might find the Javelin interior to be comfier than the new Class 800s. BTW, if you could come to Japan, you should try the original Shinkansen and Express train seats. They might not have the sturdiest or biggest tray table of them all, but even second class seats are reclinable and well-cushioned, and there are no facing seats, the seats themselves rotate so they always face the travelling direction. All those being said, nice video!

@@SuperalbsTravels I really can't tell, some of my Italian colleagues just went back to the old Ansaldo office because of their working visa has terminated. It's a really bad time for them to have to leave since there's still loads of things to do about the Bombardier merger. PM just resigned due to 'health issues', so I cannot see a certain ease of immigration before the election. Things are pretty grim.

@VT 18.16 You'll find that most of the complaints are just sour grapes because Britain is no longer capable of building it's own trains! I find it pleasing that the country that Britain helped build it's railways is now repaying the favour with building it's trains! Lets hope HS2 gets bullet trains from that same country that was the first to sign a free trade deal after Brexit instead of TGVs or ICEs from the two countries that don't deserve or want our business anymore!

I noted comments about the outdated third rail used in all the Southern regions. It has limitations, but is still used on many suburban lines around the world. It has one great advantage over overhead wires. You do not see any lines of overhead structures running through the countryside above every railway line. Even in the city it makes a difference. Imagine the area around Clapham Junction if it had overhead electrification! And it has been working with few changes for over 100 years.

Living in Ashford, I vowed only ever to use HS1 at its inception. Over the years, however it has become a victim of its own success with trains to London regularly being pretty full at peak times that more often than not commuters from Ashford cannot get a seat. For this reason I have reverted to the classic trains even if they take much longer.
@SuperalbsTravels

That's an interesting take. I suppose it's all very different at the moment though, with all trains running mostly empty.

@@SuperalbsTravels oh absolutely. I only use the trains for leisure travel at the weekends so it's impossible to get a seat around 8 to 10am as everyone wants to travel around that time if you're going for a say out. The return is not a problem as everone wants to return at different times. The London bound trip, prior to all this saw these trains already filled prior to arriving at Ashford which means a scrum to get on then pot luck to find a seat. On some occasions is almost been impossible to stand, hence the return to the electrostars where you have plenty of space!

The classic trains used to be a lot faster back in the day. It was only 55 minutes from Ashford back in the day and 1 hour 26 minutes from Dover Priory, when the high speed trains were introduced these times were slowed down because extra stops were added. It is a shame
@stpf10
@stpf10 3 жыл бұрын
@@thetelephoneprankster4254 Yes I can remember the 55 minute ride well, calling at Waterloo east and Charing x only. It was a great service all those years ago. Nowadays I believe the fastest time on the old line is 1hr 20. 40 mins on HS1 sounds great - but only if you need to be in North London. If your business is in the Charing X area add on the tube times and your probably not that much better of if you take the fastest of the classic trains!

Great to see this, nice video, haven't used the railways for over a year now as all my social visits to London have been cancelled. I will add a few extra comments. After showing the speed on your phone on the other side of the train there is a great view of the Dartford crossing bridge (linking the M25 between Essex and Kent). Later there is a great view of the Medway river, running parallel to the M2 motorway, the speed of the train makes vehicles look as if they are not moving. Also, after Folkestone, about when you mention the ability to see France on a clear day the train passes through some tunnels through the white cliffs of Dover, and passes by Samphire Hoe, a nature reserve built into the sea using spoil from the Channel Tunnel. Some years ago the track in this area was destroyed by storm waves, the sea wall and line had to be rebuilt.

I agree. The Javelin and South Eastern have become the best train service in the UK. Fastest, most punctual, most comfortable, convenient entry and exit, luggage space, never crowded (at least I haven't seen it) and extremely efficient. Add to that the glorious difference between South Eastern and other lines when you arrive at St. Pancras ready to travel to, say, Folkestone.. A section right at the entrance to the station, next to King's X and quiet and unhurried, like a corner of tranquility in the mayhem of St. Pancras.. Well done South Eastern!

I have been catching the train just after 6am, then the 8am train from King's Cross to York, timed to arrive around 9:50. I book a First Advance, so usually am able to enjoy a Full English breakfast on the train.....at least I could until Covid....which was a bit of a treat. They've brought it back now though, so hopefully on my next visit later on in the year. I book 2 nights in the hotel, and come on home early evening on the last day. That way I get three whole days with a minimal hotel cost. The only catch is having to get up at 4:45am! 😮 I also use them for my other holidays around the UK too - I'm off to Edinburgh in a few weeks.

Coming from a local, one thing people don't realise is that most services from St. Pancras to Dover don't actually terminate at Dover. They carry on towards Deal & Ramsgate before heading back to London via Faversham. This also happens going the other way round the loop. Bear in mind that some trains do terminate and go out of service, especially if there are delays, and trains that terminate at Margate via Canterbury and Faversham don't do this. I love the 395 , but you might have already guessed that - it's my profile picture

@@SuperalbsTravelsLMAO 🤣, I could probably simplify that one, so first of all you went through Stratford international, Ebbsfleat international, near Tonbridge, Ashford international, Folkestone West, Folkestone Central, Dover Priory, Martin Mill (whatever it's called), Walmar, Deal, Sandwich and Ramsgate. Then the train went to Broadstairs, Margate, Birchington, Herne Bay, Whitstable, Sittingbourne, Rochester, Ebbsfleat again?, Stratford again and then St pancreas. Is that what route you took correct?

I did it again a couple of months later, going the same way going, but after stopping for food, I missed the Margate service, so had to get the Dover Priory service. I then got a service from Dover to Sittingbourne. I have not done a looper yet though. As it is the case on most British trains, except the Alstom ones, the seats are quite flat and are not very ergonomic. Padding alone does not mean comfort. When you are travelling over one hour, then the seats surrounding posture allows a much nice ride. But, even on the recent CAF trains purchased by Northern or the Japanese designed one on Scotrail, the seats are as bad as the ones on Ryanair airplanes. But riding some of the Shinkansen, you can see that the Japanese need to learn about ergonomy (particularitly either from the French or Italians). I have recently took a very recent regional train from Brest until Nantes and I was pleased to appreciate how comfortable their seats were.

When reviewing a 375 The Chatham mainline has more features along the line to see In Kent, but the Charing Cross services via Tonbridge have much nicer countryside and better views as you arrive into London so it's a 50/50 balance at least via Tonbridge the trains do get to stretch their legs upto 100mph the Chatham Mainline the max is 90mph
