My old home town, Southend-On-Mud, but I loved it. So many memories. A lemon sorbet ice cream from Rossis, down to the seafront, watching the pit and the pendulum, a quick paddle, tide allowing, then off to the go karts to spend all my pocket money. I could have been the next Hamilton in the day. If time allowed, along to Leigh-On-Sea for a bowl of cockles with plenty of vinegar and pepper. Oh happy days! Congrats on the City status!*! 😀 (Thanks for the Share and bringing the memories back!) 💗

I left Southend back in 1964 to live in Spain. On the few visits back in the UK I found myself lost. The High Street, and Pier completely changed. This video has been an eye opener to all the changes over the decades and centuries.

I left Southend (Prittlewell in 1967, moved to Canada, I understand that places sometimes have to move with the times. ,,but with High Street, the changes are rather nice, but also nowhere near as charismatic as the original High St.

Beautiful pictures of the olden days.. everything looked much prettier! Do you have any old but not that old pictures of Sourfend, maybe just showing how it changed in the 80's/90's/00's? It would be cool to see stuff I can relate to! Great work here though!

4:18 - I think the building in the middle ground on the right was knocked down before I remember. But like so many others who grew up in the town, I spent many hours hanging out on what became known as 'College Green'. Interesting to note the Odeon complex that exists in that area now has an architectural head-nod to the one there in this picture. Thinking about College Green, maybe I should've timestamped 4:20

In my day we had less drugs,streets where cleaned ,less violence , NHS that worked for the people, people who live in the town don't live on the front ,Southend was not all about the sea front, the sea front is the only place I see cleaned ,the rest of us live with blocked drains ,rubbish , the only one's doing better are the council chief's with parking fines that seam to be their biggest priority while the rest of us live in s--t .

It may be granted City status by the monarch in lieu of the sad death of Sir David Amess at the hands of a deranged asylum seeker from Somalia, but cities should have a cathedral and Southend does not have one. Unfortunately, the biggest Anglican church here won't fit the remit and the numbers of church goers has dropped in recent years. Mosques are on the rise due to large Muslim community but City status won't increase numbers attending Christian services. The town, as that's what it is, is a total dump. A typical 70's throwback of a seafront of amusement arcades, day trippers getting drunk, with newly added County lines drug deals and London gangs squaring up to fight local ones with machetes. Lived here 54 years and it's got worse. If only Joshua and the horns of Jericho would materialise or the Luftwaffe to destroy it for it to be rebuilt again from the dust......and I like it here
@alanminter42343 жыл бұрын
That's a myth. You're going back to 1500 and something, when City's had a Bishop, and the Bishop would have a Cathedral. Even Birmingham didn't have a Cathedral when called a city. The Cathedral thing doesn't come into it now.
