This bird has now joined our area in Centurion. I have never had it here since I started living here for over 20 years. know this bird well from my backpacking days.

Thank you! I never realised that it is the Boubou who is responsible for so many of the different bird calls that I hear in Makhanda

Boubous have a wide repertoire of sounds that they make.

After a lifetime of associating this penetrating, evocative call with holidays along the Eastern Cape coast and then also hearing it occasionally in Kyalami I finally actually saw the bird briefly as it called today. Your recording has confirmed the source is the Southern Boubou. Mystery solved. Thank you for sharing this wonderful record Lynette.🙏🏼

Thank you very much for all your great videos!! I did not know that the Boubou had such a big repertoire!! I could never figure it out which birds made the sounds!

Thanks Paula, it is a pleasure. Yes, these boubous make some strange sounds sometimes.

Baie dankie vir die duidelike uiteensetting. Ek het al so 3 op my eie kon herken, maar nie besef hy maak so baie ander klanke ook nie! Die een geluid wat hy maak klink amper soos 'n Hoep-hoep. Waardeer... 🌿

Thanks so much for this!!! He had me so puzzled, as I was not aware of his full repertoire! I've been through my birdsounds DVD at least four times and couldn't identify certain calls.

I always associated the single long whistle with a warning of rain and never knew what bird it was so called it the rain bird. Interesting how some of the double and triple calls sound similar to a hoopoe

Do you know if the Boubou mimics Klaas's Cuckoo at all?
@lynetterudman4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lesley, I have never heard that they are mimics.
@CMONCMON0073 жыл бұрын
They look very similar to the Fiscal Shrike???
@lynetterudman3 жыл бұрын
Yes, quite similar but these boubous are a lot bigger.

@@lynetterudman ah ok thanks for getting back to me I always see a bird like this but its got a bit of a long tail that it moves slightly like a Wagtail...has a shortish beak. I presumed it was a Shrike...most of the time near our fencing. From south coast KZN.

Thanks Lynette - may I pick your brain on bird calls - see below. - re. the 'single note conat call' at 1:43 This single long whistle call has also mystified me for years - I've heard it all over Southern Africa & called it the 'squeeky door bird' - but I never have seen one. I heard it again in my garden in Cape Town & tracked it down to the Southern Boubou? - I THINK, I have yet to see it clearly - I only saw it as a blurr for about 1s as it darted out of a bush - is there any other bird it could be? - we see Fiscal Shrikes quite regularly - I see - from SASOL Birds - there are several types of Boubou in SA. - do the others make this sound too?
@lynetterudman3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, that squeaky door call that you refer to is a contact call. Not sure if it is the male or female making that call but normally the mate answers quickly when it hears that call and then they duet.

@@lynetterudman thank you - a couple more questions? - in Cape Town this call is only made by the Southern Boubou - no other bird? - also, I've heard this call elsewhere in Southern Africa. Will that be a Southern Boubou as well? Or do other types of boubou / birds make this sound too? - I see - from SASOL Birds - there are several types of Boubou in SA. ThankYou.

@@fraserct533 The Tropical and Swamp Boubous make similar calls but have a slightly different tone to the Southern Boubou. They Southern Boubou is found over most of South Africa.
