This a truly excellent short documentary. The subject matter is interesting and it is very well put together. I ride my bicycle down Harbor Blvd. over the Santa Clara river estuary five days a week. A few years ago in march while crossing the bridge that goes over the estuary I noticed all the water had run out of the estuary. I stopped to look down at the narrow channels and saw what I could swear were Steelhead. I looked it up and it turns out they were. I look forward every spring to when they bulldoze the mouth of the estuary to see those beautiful fish. The mind boggling difficult task they have ahead of them and the fact that they have persevered all these years is moving.

Been a trout fisher since I was a kid ( I'm 41 now ) seen pictures of steelhead my uncle caught on his trips up north. Me and him would always talk about one day getting up there. Familiar with the species seen them in the rivers of Yellowstone when I went up there with with wife and kids. Seriously never knew they had a native population here in so-cal cool documentary!

32,000 salmon fry were released from south Placer County in 1991. There was a good run for several years, beginning in 1995, but people quickly, illegally fished them out. Social misfits and immigrants just couldn't leave the salmon alone.

How can we improve watersheds to put more water in the streams for these fish?
@jwickham65
@jwickham65 8 жыл бұрын
The most direct personal action would be to garden with California native plants. They require less water, and no pesticides or soil amendments or fertilizers. This protects water quality and reduces the demand to draw water from these watersheds. As they say in the video, the whole watershed affects the health of the steelhead, the trees on the land to the fish in the water. All connected, including us. I've found that gardening with native plants shows you that we have seasons and wild-ness around around us.
@jaredaldern8890
@jaredaldern8890 8 жыл бұрын
Okay, excellent, thanks. I can see how personal actions like these could improve water quality and reduce demand. Also, what sort of collective action, in terms of watershed restoration in as-yet undeveloped areas like parks and national forests, might increase the quantity of surface and sub-surface water moving into streams?

With all the water taken for many uses its a real long shot. Rivers like the Ventura River use to be massive with a great steelhead run. Now its a trickle. And they know its not coming back because there are houses in the river bottom. That River would Flood. And its wide. Its kinda a mystery because you cant reach many of the areas now. Its private. I think they don't want anyone seeing the water being diverted

Popularity sure has its problems. Listen and Believe for they are just waiting to get their opportunity to get by, even if Humans haven't grown enough to understand the consequences of their actions. They can go and come back from the Sea, even more than just once making them a true actuator which always survive first, then deal with what is sensible to them! Millions walk or drive by, I don't think they care just so they got some good habitat to hang tough with. Don't overthink their fate, but know your actions sure can make a difference. A female steehead its smart enough to know how to try to make her eggs count, and will find the best available habitat to try to make that happen! Co-evolution is our biggest challenge when comes to the arrogance of what we share our environment with, including all those anchors that form the Steelheads Web of Life, with all as one.

When trout unlimited gets in there is more sensitive land being sold to private people wanting land next to a river, when T.U. gets involved the only thing they do is drop boulders in a river so more riparian habit is saved from erosion, those riparian habits are increased in value and are sold to the people who can afford the increased price of property, thank you TU for nothing.
