Superb, atmospheric, well-acted action thriller. Probably my favourite of Walter Hill’s films along with The Warriors. Even though Keith Carradine has top billing, Powers Boothe owns this film. Brilliant actor.

I’ve liked this film since I first saw it on cable in the early 80s, sometime around late 81 or early 82. I wasn’t sure what to think of it at first but when Ry Cooder’s score kicked in for the opening titles I was hooked. I think it’s unusual that Walter Hill denies that it’s a subtle allegory of Vietnam when it’s pretty damn obvious that’s EXACTLY what it is. Maybe he didn’t see that in the script but it’s there and it’s good.

As far as the Cajuns know, the guardsmen stole their boats AND tried to kill them - they had no idea about the blanks. Plus they didn't speak English, so had no idea what the soldiers were saying.
