Experiencing Flying Lizard for the first time was truly thrilling. I was mesmerized by the male's vibrant lemon yellow dewlap display, captivating the females. In my awe, I accidentally stopped recording, missing the magical moment of its gliding. ☹️
Sometimes the most remarkable moments in nature leave us momentarily stunned. Although I missed capturing the gliding on film, the memory of witnessing such a unique phenomenon in nature is a treasure in itself. If I ever have the opportunity to observe them again, I will surely capture their graceful gliding on camera. Enjoy the video 📹✌🏻
Southern Flying Lizard is scientifically known as Draco dussumieri. It is a fascinating creature found in the Western Ghats of India, one more wonder of wildlife in Karnataka. The Southern Flying Lizard, despite its name, it's not actually capable of fly like birds or bats. Instead, it employs a unique form of gliding, using wing-like structures called patagia.
These patagia are extended folds of skin supported by elongated ribs, which the lizard can extend to glide from tree to tree, sometimes spanning impressive distances. Their gliding ability helps them evade predators and traverse the forest canopy more efficiently.
Southern Flying Lizard males are predominantly arboreal, spending much of their time in trees. While females of Southern Flying Lizard leave safety of trees to lay their eggs on land. They have slender bodies and long, slender tails, which aid in balance during their aerial maneuvers. Their coloration can vary, but they often have shades of brown or green, helping them blend into their forest habitat. They are also known as the master of disguise.
These lizards are admired for their unique adaptation to their environment and their graceful gliding abilities.
