Couple of little juicy FYI for everyone: 1. Peanuts are actually not a nut, but a legume, which is the family of peas & beans that grow in seed pods. Multiple seeds in a single pod. But unlike peas and beans, peanuts grow under ground like carrots and potatoes. My family gets peanuts by the bushel from friends. Most people with a big garden and most farmers in the eastern half of SC grow peanuts. Every summer we get at least one or two bushels and we boil them as a family social gathering in the backyard drinking beer hanging out having fun and then put them in 1 gallon freezer bags and freeze them. That way anytime we want we can take a bag out of the freezer and defrost them and have boiled peanuts year round. 2. Most tourists think Charleston and Savannah are similar until they visit both. The truth is other than being cities in the south on the coast Charleston and Savannah have nothing in common. Savannah was a planned city by Oglethorpe who had a charter from the King and he came to America from England to create Savannah. Charleston was created by plantation owners that were in the Caribbean. Primarily Barbados. That’s why so much of the architecture downtown resembles architecture in the Caribbean islands. Charleston had an extremely international and diverse culture. It was by far the most diverse city in the colonies and it was also the richest city in America for quite a while. I would argue that Charleston is more historic than Boston and any city in America. When you walk around downtown you will see dozens of architectural styles and dozens of different influences culturally religiously artistically and so much more! Back in the day when they would be balls and societal events the women were wearing the latest fashions from Paris and London and Italy. Rich Southerners, particularly plantation owners, often sent their children back to Europe to be educated. Actually, if you really wanna do something incredibly interesting when you visit Charleston go to some of the cemeteries. Visit the oldest cemeteries downtown and just look at the names on the headstones. So many famous and historic people that helped form and create our bill of rights and the Constitution and our history. Another great place to visit is called Charles Towne Landing. And of course the different plantations.

Finally got to visit Charleston for the first time after living in the south for three years now. At least once a year, I take my older two boys on separate camping trips based on their interests and input. My oldest picked Fort Sumter, so away we went for an extended weekend in Charleston. I definitely used this video to guide my selection for the few food stops we would make. Based on your glowing recommendations, we went to Callie’s and Lewis Barbecue . Oh man, both those places were on point but that barbecue was just downright awesome. I spent way too much and ate way too much but totally worth it. As for Charleston, what a great area and that city has such a great vibe. We hit of Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter, Angel Oak Tree, the downtown parks, and the beach near Morris Island Lighthouse for sunset. In addition to Charleston, we explored the nearby Francis Marion National Forest. We did a 6-mile blackwater paddle on Wambaw Creek with a local outfitter. Really enjoyed that as we got to see a lot of wildlife including several alligators while kayaking. I thought it would be nerve-wracking but I didn’t find it so at all. They kept their distance and if they felt threatened they just dove into the water to hide. We did a few trails as well and I found those more sketchy in terms of wildlife threats. On one in particular, the I’On Swamp Trail, you traverse this narrow berm between bodies of water. You can’t see anything in the water and all I could think of was an alligator jumping out. They even had a sign that read “Shhh…alligator sleeping zone ahead.”
@AdventuresofAplusK3 жыл бұрын
What a great pick! We really want to go there! SO happy you enjoyed both spots, Lewis Barbecue is still one of our favorites, despite having access to so many amazing joints in TX! We are hoping to get some of Callie's GF biscuit mix when we get back to TX to make biscuits and relive our experience there. Alligator hikes and kayaking makes us nervous, but just like bears, they usually want to avoid you. How cool to experience some of the nature in this area. Besides Charleston, the only other place we have been to in SC is Congaree National Park, but it was pouring rain, so we quickly did a hike and left to dry off haha.
@MichaelYoungblood13 жыл бұрын
@@AdventuresofAplusK we did Congaree a few years ago and enjoyed our time there. Did some hiking and kayaking. It’s a small park and a day is all you really need. Definitely not in summer though. Besides the great coastline, SC has some great outdoor spots in the northern part of the state. Table Rock SP, Lake Jocassee, Caesars Head SP, Whitewater Falls (tallest falls east of the Mississippi River). Well upper falls is in NC and lower falls is in SC.

@@AdventuresofAplusK Oh I'm at Matt's at least once a week. By far the best BQ I've had on the West Coast. I've lived in Puyallup back in the early 2000s and never found a BBQ joint that really impressed me. But Matt's is legit (Matt is from TX). About half their crew went all over TX about a year ago, including Snow's in Lexington, which many consider #1 in TX. I live about 1/2 mile from the Alberta District ( I often walk over to the Salt & Straw y'all visited--Pip's is close enough as well). I'm in the wine industry and have been here for 8 out of the last 10 years (went back and forth between here and Houston at one point). Your Houston video was the first I watched and it initially made me homesick, until I watched your Seattle ones. I love Seattle over TX, even PDX--just too expensive for me!
