In March of 2020 the Golden Gate Railroad Museum relocated its steam locomotive 2472 along with GP9 3194, and H-12-44 1487, to their new home at Schellville on the Northwestern Pacific. After a brief overview on the history of the engine, the 2472 is seen moving over the Union Pacific, California Northern, and NWP, drawing attention from curious onlookers where ever it rolled by. The future looks bright for GGRM, and hopefully we will see 2472 steaming at Schellville in time for her 100th birthday in 2021.

My bicycle commute during the 1980's went through Bay Meadows parking lot & San Mateo County fair grounds where this locomotive was being restored. I observed this work in progress for 10 years as I pedaled my way to & from work. I moved from the area in 1988. I attended the 1991 Railfair in Sacramento where I was able to see this beautiful restored steam locomotive.

Thank you!!!! I’ve been wondering what happened to 2472 for so long! I remember riding a train pulled by it in 2002 when I was very young, great to see it’s still here

I live at the tail end of the former NWP line which is now the SMART train line, I hope I get to see 2472 make a trip all the way to Marin county sometime in the future.

That was the last time the caboose saw the main line also, it now sits on the North spur behind other motive power

Hope Southern Pacific 2472 returns soon. I live in San Jose, California. And I hope this locomotive would return to San Jose sometime in the future.

There's tons of possibilities for 2472 to operate if the train runs to Willits It's optional for it to run on the California Western route to Fort Bragg California Although one Problem to that would probably be the 30゚ sharp curves on the railroad

That would be amazing if they ran that route with it.

Unfortunately the tracks of the old NWP between Santa Rosa and Willits are not in service and are not likely to ever be usable again north of Cloverdale.

always wondered why they remove the crank rod whenever a steam locomotive is moved like that.
@ericemmons3040
@ericemmons3040 2 жыл бұрын
If you're referring to the eccentric crank for the valve gear, I think it's an extra piece that could come loose and fall off; better to have it safely stored so it isn't damaged in any way. . .

Beautiful and save most historical locomotives but I see 2472 head light is missing or stolen?
@ericemmons3040

Probably stored away safely so it doesn't get damaged during the move. . .

Excellent video/audio with a perfect narration. Although I was familiar with the lines, the narration helped a lot without impinging on the locomotive sounds.

What happened to #2472's piston rods and headlight?
@markfrench8892
@markfrench8892 4 жыл бұрын
The main piston rods are usually removed so as to not score the cylinders. There's no way to get lub oil to them. And since it's being moved while it's not under power they probably removed the headlamp so it wouldn't get stolen.

it would have been awesome if they came to santa cruz especially because of its history with southern pacific even thought 2472 could not go to felton because of the turns and the tunnel the fairbanks morse and the gp9 could but i am happy to see it found a home.
