Love the historical videos like this, so I look forward to you resuming posting some good old SP stuff and stuff on Cajon/Tehachapi. Maybe the rule was instituted after this, but before the mid train helpers cut away from the trailing freight cars, they should have been "tied down" to make sure that they would not roll away when the helpers pulled away.

back during that time.. SP had a uptick in business but they didn't have the motive power to keep up with the demand. They leased from Conrail, CSX, Santa Fe, UP, and others

A Conrail engine in California?

Power from railroads across the country have been known to make their way out to California. Leased locomotives, run through power, etc.. Not so much now days but quite common in the 80s and 90s

Back in the 80s and 90s SP was chronically power hungry and often leased locomotives from railroads from across the country. They also had run through agreements with other roads that they transfered trains to and from as well as other roads " owing horsepower hours", etc
