In the 80's when I was a student at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo we used to hop on freight cars near the San Luis station when they added helper engines on the train to push it up the Cuesta grade. We would leave a car near the tracks in Santa Margarita to drive back when we hopped off as they removed the helper engine there. Lots of fun in my wild college days!

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. I LOVE watching train activities. I also LOVE watching trains as they sway from side to side... it's so darn cool, like here. 👉 27:15👏😁

I live in Grover beach and I can’t believe how much freight traffic used to run this line. I’ve seen one freight train in the last 10 Years or so. My guess would be that they keep freight off since it’s such a heavy passenger line but who knows. Wish I could see more

Push-pull locals can make for interesting model railroading, especially with DCC available.

Unfortunate SP-DRGW didn't have a few more years to get healthy, perhaps they could have kept from being absorbed by the Borg.

Yep, Armour yellow is a carcinogen that afflicted a lot of good locomotives. Starts out as a small tumor under the cab windows that quickly becomes malignant and it eventually spreads to cover the whole body. Rest in Peace MP, WP, MKT, DRGW/SP, and CNW….and Tennessee Pass.
