Cangshan Mountain in northwest Yunnan Province boasts rich biodiversity. On the western slope of Cangshan, the Yangbi River flows through the valley of Malutang Village. It is home to a maple-like plant species. About two decades ago, scientists identified five individuals and named them the "acer yangbiense." The species was once a critically-endangered species. Teetering on the brink of extinction, the "wings" attached to its fruit have evolved to embrace the wind upon reaching maturity. However, the species hides deep in the valley. The "winged" fruits need to travel quite a long distance, so the pollination is far from satisfactory, pushing it toward extinction. What is the fate of this plant? Check the video to find out.
