Eric: For those of us who have been or are auto technicians, we understand completely what it took to do this video. When a customer is on their way to pick up their vehicle and you are "under the gun" to get the job finished and there is no time for error, making a video has to be the last thing you wanted to do. I'm sure I can speak for everyone how much we appreciate what you do. Thank you very much.

Everyone has an instant gratification mindset now, they want their 3 hour axle leak fixed on their 1 hour lunch break and it has to be done today even though there's 5 other vehicles in front of them in your 2 man shop. If the general public knew that the average mechanic makes $30,000/year with no benefits, I bet they'd be a little nicer to the man busting hands open to fix your problems.

Just know that some of your customers are pleasantly surprised to find their vehicles done at the end of the day. And appreciate you stayed late to finish it, although we feel bad we caused you stay late. And understand that sometimes repairs go unexpectedly long, or the out-of-towners with a minivan full of kids had a breakdown, or the mother-in-law needs here snow tires on _today_ because it might snow.

@@COBRO98 That was my last net after 20-something years in the business, not including the 2 years I took mostly off to finish my upper division work at college. After which, I rolled out my roll-arounds from storage and went back to work at the dealership. 2 years of that, post graduation was enough for me. At the dealership, the Tuneup/Driveability guys were the big money makers, followed by the AC/Electrical guys - which I had been at my first dealership some 25 years earlier, and pretty much everyone else sucked hind teet. Not everyone, but most everyone.

Painting that bracket is the difference between a shop that repairs cars, and a shop that has a real mechanic, nobody is going to see it. But you have enough pride in your work that you spend the time and money. To do it the right way.

Trying to put the springs on with the shoes in position has always been a "mother lover" for me so I nearly always assemble all the little springy mothers on the shoes on the bench and bring the pair to the vehicle after and pry bar themn up and into position. Seems much less stressful and no pinched skin or springs escaping across the shop... Oh hello Mrs O :D

Being an owner of a 2019 Wrangler JLU, I really enjoyed learning how to change the seal and bearings. As comented on part I, I managed to replace the e-brakes while keeping the axle in since I did not want to fiddle with the seals and bearings, which add extra costs to the job. But I know I’ll have to do them eventually, and now I know how!

You started out right by mounting the first shoe but you didn't put both springs on both shoes at once and bend them around the cable adjuster. It's so much easier that way.

I had to replace the rear shoes on my wife's "Toy" which was the first time I've done drum brakes in about 20 years. They were not bendix brakes, so it was different & my tools were useless. It actually went OK, but I remembered going to a class on disc brakes, way back when, where the old-timers were complaining about how difficult it was replacing disc brakes compared to the bendix style brakes! I'm so glad I can wait another 140,000 miles before I get to replace the rear brakes again! Disc brakes rule!

The offical way of getting the bearing retainer off is to drill a hole approximately 3/4ths of the way through it, and a little smaller width wise. Then use a cold chisel to wack right over ware you drilled. This will cause the retainer to split and slide right off by hand or fall off. Just for those who may not have a torch, this is how it's done.

Reading glasses or 'seeing up close' glasses are a pain when you're moving around a lot. I discovered the Clic-it type readers years ago, of course the name brand ones are pricey as heck, the aftermarket ones work as well and are cheap enough to not be too concerned with messing up. I'd wager you'd like them better than ones you leave lying around all over the place.
