It's good to show the kids the fire fighter in "regular" clothes and let the kids see him or her get into full gear and hear them breathing with the mask on. It may help the kid if he comes in contact with a fire fighter who is dressed like a monster in a panic situation. I have heard from fire fighter friends who have been in that bad situation how the kid wasn't quite as afraid of the FF. Good job and great video.

We once sent to a woman with a broken arm. When we got there she was dead. Turns out she most likely got awoken in the middle of the night because of chest pain but when she got out of bed she tripped on her bed sheets, fell and broke her arm. That’s why she called 911...the broken arm. Just as the Lt said...we were behind the 8 ball when we arrived.

FFx2, EMSx16; push button for wheel lowering and raising, unbelievable! I just came along too early, although on the flip side my qualifications test for engineer was on a 1961 American LaFrance, sweet ride, 750 pump. I left when they were introducing 1.75” hose lines. I’m glad all y’all are still on the job. Be safe and at the end of your shift go home to your families. I went inside as a RN FOR 30+ years in ER, PACU, OR, CNOR (I use to have lots of other initials but they too are behind me) 😎🙏🏽✌🏽

Glad to have found this video. I'm actually getting ready to start my LT training in my department. Commenting on what he was saying towards the end: This job is the best job ever but... it's not for everyone. Definetly look into it before you take a shot at it and dont just look at one cities department, look at as many different cities and departments. For example we have 8 departments in our county and we all do things differently and we all have different SOGs SOPs. My best advice I can give to anyone who has their heart set on firefighting is dont come in cocky and come in with an open mind every day. I know chiefs who have been firefighting since the 70s who still learn every single day. I see a lot of guys who come in thinking they know everything because their dad or someone in their family was a firefighter.

You know what's really cool? To be one of these firefighters and know that for at least some of these kids, they will remember this day the rest of their lives. They may not even remember the individual firefighter himself but when they are 40, 50, 80 years old, they'll think back to the time in elementary school a firefighter crew visited them. Some of them will remember it so much they'll want to take up the profession.

At So. Metro, can you promote directly to lieutenant from a firefighter position or do you need to promote to engineer first. My department promoted through the ranks including f/fighter to engineer to Lt. to Cpt. and up to a BC, Chief of the dept usually was hired from outside the dept...Medics could be at any rank and varied from EMT 1 to EMT P!
