A LOT of people told me this was the best beginner’s lock pick set, so I bought one to see what I though 😀 What are your opinions on this iconic Southord PSX-14 set?

That little trick at 5:57 with the extra tension tool is brilliant. The PSX14 was my first set, I bought it about 4 or 5 years ago, but never really followed up on the whole thing and threw it in my junk drawer. I've picked this up now about 2 -3 weeks ago, bought a bit more kit and practice locks, and this time I'm determined to become proficient.

I have wanted a set of picks for quite a while now and while I didn't want to spend a lot on a first set I wanted quality. This set seemed to be the perfect balance. I already had a Master Lock No.1 and No. 140 padlocks (which I understand are excellent starter locks)to get started on, and they worked beautifully. I was consistently picking both with about an hour's practice. I highly recommend them! 👍👍

Hi Guys, I got this kit when I was starting out. Please save your money and rather buy anouther kit (Sparrows I can recommend). I found nearly all the picks so so. The best things are the handles and the case. The S rake is also not bad. But SouthOrd has really much better products, especially in their slimline line. Just my 2cents but please don't let my opinion sway any decision you may have

@@kolonels12 you can get sparrows comparatively priced in the us. They usually don’t require much if any sanding and polishing. Most picks need at least a little. Petersons are expensive and still need some tlc but are fantastic. You wouldn’t think the grip would make that much of a difference but it does. I also buy them individually or in a 10 pack from clk, uks, or LockpickWorld. Southord has some picks that require very little polishing, this kit being one of them. This kit or the tuxedo from sparrows and some grips or another sparrows kit with dipped handles. I’ve found sparrows to be the best bang for your buck. Even the goso kit is pretty good. Overall great polished up finish. Dangerfield makes good stuff too at a good price. It’s not til the petersons and multi picks that you really get into the truly expensive stuff.

I know this is a late reply but thank you very much for sharing your experience. I’m looking to get into locksport as a hobby and, upon researching Sparrow’s kits, I found their Night School Tuxedo kit seemed like something far more suited to what I’d want out of a kit. I appreciate your input :)

Was my first kit, opened quite a few locks. I learned a lot from that kit. Like many noobs I was heavy handed and eventually broke some tools. price was excellent for the use. Moved on to some sparrows and a good bit of peterson tools.

Started with the same set and a bag of assorted Master locks, while I have great memories of all those opens using the set as soon as I turned to harder locks I realized how much it was lacking. Granted I wasn't sure if I'd still be picking 2 years later but here I am. Invested in a Praxis kit, with the TOK tensioners and wow it made a tremendous difference on the types of locks I could open. If you aren't sure that locksport is for you, this is a much better option than the cheap amazon kits. Now I'm buying from Sparrows, I love that I can order individual picks (it's nice to have backup's). Also the SSDEV and Monkey paw are fantastic additions. Great memories and keep those reviews coming!

My first set was a Southord MPXS-14 purchased probably around 2005 or so and I still have it and still use the short hook that came with it. Although it has the riveted thicker handles on the short hook and a few other tools. I just ordered a few more short hooks and some of those rubber boots to go on my existing stuff. The zipper case is much nicer than the older button top case that mine came with.

This was also my fiirst kit and introduction some 8 yrs ago to the sport. I found it to be a great kit to get started picking and learning. A little bit of finishing touch up on the picks and some black RTV silicone to keep the rubber handle covers from slipping was all that was needed!

My first set I think was the 14 piece SouthOrd set, but I don't think it was the "slim" version, but the regular one. They have changed a few things. They didn't used to come with the rubber handles and it came in a "pouch" which was actually made up of 2 strips of leather stitched together (much like the one you showed that the C1500 came in). This stitching came undone fairly quickly and I have since wrapped it in duct tape to hold it together. In place of that double ended rake you showed, mine came with a large half diamond. Also, all picks were the sandwiched steel handles. I think they were also more expensive when I bought them based on the price you mentioned. I searched my email history and in 2007, I bought the MPXS-14, which basically was how I described it and I spent $37.95 + shipping and handling.

Thank you for a well balanced review, I agree with all that you've said here. This was my first pick set, it coped very well with my newbie heavy handedness. I soon realised that I was going to need something else for tighter keyway, hence I moved onto the C2010. I still use the C2010 set, especially the shallow hook, while the PXS-14 is hardly touched nowadays.

In my honest opinion, the Sparrows Gotham is the best beginner set available. It has a wonderful variety of picks and tension tools, an amazing case that can easily hold way more tools (Sparrows Sherman case) it is the only Sparrows set that comes with removable handles so a beginner has the option of handled or bare tools to figure out what they like. Also, it is a great price for a beginner set. The only thing it's missing is dedicated top of keyway tensioners, but the z wrenches can be used for ToK, so at least there is that. It is the only kit I recommend for beginners but is great for experienced pickers as well.

Southord is a massive supplier to law enforcement in the US as they have the best deals and discounts both to departments and officers; I think most LEOs that can get pick training in the US probably start with a Southord set. Southord makes some great picks as you advance like their Euro line as well as the Max line; they also carry a great assortment of tension wenches. The first kit I started with through an LE training was a Southord kit, I don’t recall which, as well as a Peterson knife and decoder. If you pair Southord with Peterson and Sparrows you can make a near perfect setup. I will say I prefer their older vinyl pick sleeves over these odd rubber ones and even use the vinyl sleeves on some of my sandwiched handles. I love the stress relief that locksport can provide and you can really relax over LE picking which is all about results and usually involves bypasses then raking with SPPing being a rarity; because when all else fails a sledge hammer and time will open near every door. I have a lot of picks and tools in my kit, including Southord picks (Max) and a few of their tension wrenches along with a few other manufacturers. Like LockNoob I like the Peterson Gem, but unlike him can get them quite cheap as I don’t have to pay shipping; being able to pickup Peterson picks directly is one of the few benefits that living in NY has.

Cause it’s sturdier. That’s simply why. Keep in mind they are talking beginners. Noobs. People that aren’t that educated on picking locks. Should they start with the Slim Line, if they are trying to be decent. Yes. If they are just giving it the ol’ college try. This set. Some people don’t want to ruin a $40 set.

I was about to buy the southord you have recommended in old videos and then you posted this. I appreciate the guides but now I’m more confused on what to buy. Do I buy the stronger one (PX14) or the better more delicate one (slimmer) as a beginner. I am based in the US and we have locks with the wider pathways but I think we may also have the narrower pathways (not sure). If I learn one, will I know how to use the other? Is it the same technique? Will the slimmer ones open both types of pathways or just the the narrower pathways?

I got this and as a newbie i’ve really abused it and i haven’t broken a pick yet. I will say the rake, shallow hook and diamond are the most useful for me. you can grind down that ridiculous deep one to make a medium of sorts, it’s just too silly to fit in most locks or be useful

I like the SouthOrd picks. They are a bit chunky. 0.63 mM (0.024 inch.) My Sparrows picks measure in at 0.60 (+or-). The shanks in the middle are 1.10 and 0,80 respectively. I find the Sparrows a little bit easier to get around dragging on warding. That must be because of the height of the shank. I did eventually modify the SouthOrd shanks with some sandpaper making them a little more oval than rectangular. But did NOT sand the working tip. That made a huge difference. Love the vids. Good work.

I think SSDeV thin and thick hooks (.025 and .015 inch thick, 3 hooks each) plus a couple top of the keyway tensioners would be better set for a beginner (and not so beginner). I might be biased because I only put value to spp, though. That should cost about $20-30.

A lot of people recommend southord as they are consistent with quality. I'm fussy tho, and I like thinner picks. Thier tuxedo kit seems to get good reviews, so that's the one on my wishlist. Since I've had my sparrows basic locksport kit Its given me a much better picking success than the cheaper kits did, so personally I will be looking to add to that with some 18 and 15 picks.

I do like this kit. The way I look at it, if it's a choice between this kit and something like a Goso set, I would take this in a heartbeat. I'm still too heavy handed and lacking in finesse so these sturdy picks have their place with me, supplemented by a few others bought as singles. One of the first I acquired was a De Forest and I've never looked back since. I have other lovely pick sets such as Serenity & Praxis, but I cringe every time I put a delicate thin pick into a lock then treat it like a crowbar. So I keep using a mix of picks. Would I recommend this set though? As a beginner (which I still am, in all honesty), wholeheartedly yes!
