I just felt like the song was preaching against the Word of God. But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. Matthew 5:38 Of course if someone tries to harm you, you are going to defend yourself and your loved ones but we dont walk around advertising “hey you better not mess with me”. Hey guys, I love the ministry and work you do. It's truly been a blessing. So I found something I think is super interesting. In Matthew 5:38, Jesus says "If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also" In Jesus' time, if somebody were to slap another person, it would be with their right hand, as the left was considered unclean, and people weren't allowed to touch one another with it. Therefore, if somebody were to slap your right cheek, it would be a backhanded slap, which was typically reserved for someone of a higher social rank to do against someone of lower social rank as a sort of "know your place" slap in that culture. If somebody slapped a person on their left cheek, it would be a front-handed slap, which was used by people of equal rank. So turning the other cheek, while nonviolent, was still calling out the person, and saying, "Even if you physically hurt me, I won't give you the power to mark me as 'less than.' If you slap me, you'll slap me as an equal." Now, the person who slapped them is in a predicament. They can't backhand them on their left cheek. The only way they could slap them would be as an equal, which would reverse the insult of the first slap, and essentially be repentance for it. Even if the person who turned the other cheek was taken to be flogged, their point had still been made. It's forcing the person to acknowledge the injustice done against you, which is kind of what Jesus does when he asks the guard in John 18 why he slapped him. Loved this episode, and appreciate the ministry you guys do. God bless Here's a link to Walter Wink's essay on this passage of scripture. He's a professor of Biblical Interpretation at Auburn Theological Seminary in New York City. www.cres.org/star/_wink.htm

Jonathan Baez That’s the very scripture I thought of when I first saw & heard Tobi’s song - which I know you didn’t say what you think about it either way, but I think the song is straight up nonsense - and that verse is the correct response to have when someone’s violent towards us, or “tries” us. I appreciate the cultural historical knowledge of the time when Jesus was saying that verse...very interesting, thanks for that!

But to take this in context, Jesus also says if a man makes you go one mile with him, walk with him two. If he takes your shirt, give him your coat also. Considering the context of Matthew 5:38 i think the original interpretation makes more sense
@jonathanbaez45704 жыл бұрын
@@12345654321zack, I used that specific example in my comment, but each of these situations (Walking a mile, giving the coat, etc.) are elaborated on in the essay I linked at the end. Much love

Also, there is a difference between a “peaceful” person and a “harmless” person. Someone who couldn’t hurt anyone anyway isn’t peaceful, they are harmless. There is a difference. Someone can only be peaceful if they COULD hurt someone, but choose not to.

Hey guys, just wanna let you know that I love the podcasts. With the grand jury decision for the officers involved in the Breonna Taylor shooting coming out today and people being confused or not in agreement I wanna make myself available to sit down and talk about it in whichever way. I've been a police officer for 7 years, working in Narcotics for the past 4 and I just wanna make myself available for dialogue and hopefully to give some insight into day to day policing, policies and tactics etc. that might help someone understand why the indictment for only one of the cops was reached. No doubt that Breonna's death was sad and unnecessary but if anyone wants to feel free to discuss, I'm here

Guys it was from the sermon on the Mount. Jesus often used analogies and idioms. What I believe that text is saying isn't that you should turn the other cheek literally but that you should remain vulnerable even in the midst of evil for Love's sake. That's the love of God. If someone literally punches me, I don't retaliate. It doesn't mean you don't defend yourself. It means you don't retaliate. You don't fight back. You don't go offensive. You leave yourself vulnerable to potentially being hit again. And it's for different contexts as well. Not just physical but emotional or Spiritual hurts that may occur. Why? The reality of the heart is that if you choose to retaliate or go on the offense back, your heart is already impure. It's bitterness ungodly anger and hatred you'll be in danger of. That sermon is the path to purity and holiness. It's the path to guarding our hearts from the corruption of the soul

First of all, beautiful conversation. The last bit of what you closed with brought tears to my eyes. Your way with words often has that effect on me. I listened to that "Try Jesus Not Me" song. I'm embarrassed as a lover of Hip Hop (although not surprised) that would be number 2 on the charts. I thought about what I was gonna say to you regarding where I think you should be on the charts, but knowing of you I knew that didn't even need to be said. The fact that you guys mentioned that song in this particular message actually speaks volumes. It's a slap in the face to artists like you for that kind of stuff to be put mainstream, but God. Everything He does is greater than ANY of my most brilliant theories or ideas so He knows just what He's doing there. You probably get this all the time, but I simply wanted to acknowledge that you are doing wonderful things for the Kingdom and that you are appreciated no matter what the charts ever have to say.
