They knew this was coming so it really doesn't make sense. Perhaps the loss of morale in the last days of the Soviet Union simply made them careless? I also noticed that they played "Deutschland Uber Alles" instead of "Auferstanden Aus Ruinen," so East Germany was already gone.

Communism killed more people worldwide than all the empires that ever ruled. They did it by terror, by starvation, by imprisonment , by war, by secret poisoning, and by so-called wars of liberation.
