You misunderstand that. Here, in ex Yugoslavia as well as Soviet Union, there was always this sort of comedic social conception of western products. Like early Levi's Jeans, early Volkswagens and Mercedes, Marlboro's, Coca Cola and so on... Because often these countries would have limited trading with the West, a sort of black market developed where due to their rarity and scarcity, they became luxury items. So, smoking Marlboro's gave you a certain social status, as well as wearing Levi's and God forbid you drove anything other than a Lada, Trabant or a Yugo, you were considered a God amongst men. So they aren't advertising the product by emphasizing it, they are using the product to emphasize the social standing of the character.
