During the nineties I spent months at a time in Russia and took advantage of the mass of electronic components one could buy so cheaply. Microwave diodes, RF transistors etc. Even got a box of GK71 pentodes that used to make guitar amplifiers. A pair gives 400 watts of clean punchy sound. Sheets of PTFE based printed circuit board material, exotic insulation material and very fine silver and ptfe coaxial cable used in spacecraft. Was a wonderful time.

If it comes to that you could have done a great business trading Philips TDA4510 microchips (Pal to Secam) - in the 90s there was a huge demand for those microchips in (post)USSR countries

Take to account, that most of that electronics is military grade (you can see diamond symbol on many ICs - that means military grade), that's why it looks very solid. Consumer mass-production electronics has much worse quality...

@@saimon1680 Not so "much worse" quality, actually. These days every Ukranian or a native of the Baltic countries, or some of Eastern Europeans (Poles, probably, more prominent of all) will talk such things. You don't need to believe their words - they are extremely biased, and they resent everything that connects them to the Soviet past. They'll do not give you an objective picture. Surely, military grade means higher quality - that's true in any country. Surely, there was (and is) products of substandard quality - again, true for every place. I may take for granted, that quality deteriorated toward the en of the Soviet Union.
@saimon1680
@saimon1680 3 ай бұрын
Well I’m not talking about their words on soviet times, just what I’ve seen by my self thru these years. Yes sure on military equipment higher quality is standard on every country but I happen to own some old ussr era civil equipment such as radios an synths and I admire the efforts on trying to make everything nice and tidy! Also very clever designs.

We had russian oscilloscopes in my college too, because they were the cheapest they could find. They must be gone now. The ussr consumer electronics were shit. Electrolic caps were leaking. Lots of problems. Even tho some products lived very long. It was 50/50. Either you had somthing good or shit. It coud break after a month or it coud live 40, 60 years. But the army componets were realy good. Some componets were plated with gold and silver. I live in latvia were we made boxes for speakers and mutch more. We also built radios. Like Riga10. Its now been 29 years since the ussr broke down. And our country and many outher are free. I prefer to search for "consumer" electronics, theyare easier to find and they were also exported here too, so I sometime find them on flea markets and garage sales. And there is good quality products, like the Riga 104 radios and the Elektronika C433 color TV.

You can get a similar result with some paint called anti-gravel paint, mostly used on the bottom of the cars and some good old boats to prevent slippery surfaces, I’m sure there are many levels of grain size and you could get that by using a small grain. The same finish is on my Junost combo organ

Isn't some of those parts of oscilloscopes too? I have seen cables and parts looking like that in Soviet oscilloscopes (that were, incredibly, in a French school lab, and were from USSR, not Russia...). It's very interesting to see the difference between military/scientific electronics and "consumer" electronics. You could search for Soviet radios, they are interesting too, and AM radios like the Signal series are small and easy to find.

Also Soviet ciruit diagrams are weird. I used to read Pадио magazine in '80 and it was horrible to understand diagrams. Integrated circuts pinout raster is different (metric) - 2.50 mm instead od 2.54. For 40 pin IC it makes 1 mm shorter chip.

Not 1mm, but 0.76. It's not about the metric system. And in the principles of copying. A Soviet person takes an electronic board from a computer, and the pitch of microcircuits is 2.54, like Texas Instruments. And he begins to ask himself questions - how is it "Made in the USSR", and step 2.54? Disorder, so get burnt!

There were people purposefully destroying the Soviet radio industry in the 90s. For example, in Ukraine, deindustrialization has been very successful in all industries - rocketry, shipbuilding, aircraft engineering, automotive engineering, light industry, machine tool building, radio engineering. The task is to make room for European goods. Performed. Russia has managed to save something. In the light of the events with the sanctions, several radio electronics factories are being built there, since components from China are not always satisfactory in quality. The military doesn't want to depend on suppliers abroad, even though it was cheap. The Russian army today is the locomotive for the development of the electronics industry within the country. As far as I know, today all Russian military electronics are made in Russia, including Elbrus processors.
