For those saying that Buran was an improved version of the Space Shuttle, I disagree. The basic idea behind the Space Shuttle was to make a LEO spacecraft that would have been as reusable as possible. For that reason, the Space Shuttle had most of it's systems incorporated into the orbiter, including the three main engines. The Space Shuttle had only 2 side boosters allowing for an easier recovery. The only disposable part of the Space Shuttle was the orange fuel tank. The Buran however wasn't designed with reusability in mind. Buran had 4 side boosters making recovery harder(if there was any attempt at recovery since the boosters most likely landed in the hard desert ground unlike the Space Shuttle's SRBs which parachuted into the sea). The Buran also had it's main engines on the central fuel tank which separated from the orbiter, thus the expensive engines were lost.
@nagantm4419 жыл бұрын
they actually did recover the boosters to see how the rd-170 engines performed. the boosters had parachutes. also, the RD-0120 LH2 engines on the main energia booster as far less expensive than the SSME due to them being designed to be expendable.

Why is this simulation showing the buran rolling 90 degrees and ending up on the underside after liftoff. The reason the shuttle does this is to get out over the Atlantic. There is no reason for the buran to do it.

***** Not like that, It's so that the shuttle can communicate with ground stations as it heads farther downrange.
@EricIrl9 жыл бұрын
noneof yourbusiness The initial roll performed by the Shuttle shortly after launch was for a number of reasons. Firstly it placed the Shuttle on the right launch trajectory. Secondly, it placed the Orbiter in a position where it was hanging underneath the External Tank during ascent. This was an extremely important thing to do as it reduced the aerodynamic load and the physical stresses on the whole stack - especially in respect of the three attachment points which held the Orbiter to the ET. Since the Buran was attached to the Energia booster in a similar arrangement, it is highly likely that the roll would need to be performed by Buran for the same reasons as the Shuttle.
@ArtForSwans10 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: Buran was created as a counterpart to the shuttle because the Soviets suspected the US shuttle was a military craft, and as such Buran was designed to be able to carry weapons into space. When the Soviets learned that the US Shuttle was not designed to be an orbital weapons powerhouse, they scrapped Buran and placed the only orbiter built in a warehouse after the collapse of the Soviet Union, during which the warehouse did some collapsing of its own and destroyed Buran.

The lak of founds purpose and interest shut down the buran program in the mid 90's and n the late 90's the collaps of the hangar occured meaning that the mock up is the only remain of that shuttle program

Wasn't as good as the Space Shuttle, only 1 was built, never took actual people to space, launched only empty. Canceled after a while, can't say if it was safer or not consider it's has been to space only once. Look like a ripoff of the USA space shuttle too, I don't say the ship was bad, she was beautiful but impossible to confirm anything. The saddest part of all, is that the fate of that poor shuttle was to be crashed by the Hangar it was stored on, according to many resources, the maintenance of the shuttle (not just the hangar), was so poor, that many speculate that even if she wouldn't be crashed, doubtfully she could ever be reused and fly to space again like the USA shuttle did, even if she would be massively refurbished, building a new shuttle instead, would be cheaper, so that's how bad the maintenance was ... Therefore, it was never officially considered a full space shuttle as it was never proven it would be reusable, (not saying it wasn't capable of but common fact) I am sure if she would've been taken care of the right way, she would've been a great space shuttle ... Also worth mentioning that the Soviet Era was full of BS and false facts/propaganda, so no one really knows anything about it for certainty, not even if she really was canceled by the fall of the soviet union or that she was never truly capable of being reusable after her landing. (due to miss calculations and so on) Edit: also forgot to mention, that the actual design for her was confirmed to be stolen by the KGB from the USA, stolen in the 1970s, the ship was so alike that the space shuttles of the USA could connect to MIR with hardly any adjusts, would never be possible without a major overhaul unless the basic body structure was the same.

The Energia was a far superior system to the N1 and had promise. The Buran itself was a superior Shuttle. Frankly longterm re-usable spacecraft are the only real option. There is nothing sustainable about a disposable system that is 80% dead weight compared to the payload, and cannot be, at least in part, re-used. There will be no emergent space economy until we have efficient SSTOs.

The Soviets didn't even want to build a space Shuttle, they considered it a bad idea, but they decided to do it as a symmetric response to what they've seen a potential spacecraft kidnapping ship, which STS was in their eyes. The propulsion system on the Buran was completely different and safer though, the Energia rocket which provided the propulsion system could have been used to carry other kinds of loads, and, what's incredibly impressive for the time, and which STS couldn't do, was that Buran could pilot entirely itself, including the landing. No GPS, computer that is now 30 years old, and it missed the predicted point of contact with the landing strip just by 3 metres. Having more resources, they could have created a shuttle that would perform missions on its own and only take cosmonauts onboard when necessary. If STS was Buran, all the fatal accidents that happened, would have been avoided.
@beoknez61454 жыл бұрын
its like saying who stole the design of a boat that floats. The design is made because it must follow orbital and aero dynamics. However, the reason that i disagree with you is that both orbiters are vastly different, and the soviet version is far more advanced and fullfills the reusable option more than the us counterpart. it also didnt require refurbishment unlike the US orbiter and the Energia could be lauched independent without and orbiter...

The Soviets didn't want to build Buran in the first place. They only did it, because they saw STS as a military threat, as the design made no sense for them unless it would be used just to kidnap enemy spaceships. They build it only as a symmetric response, so obviously it looked kind of the same. They made several improvements although. First of all, Buran was lighter as it did not carry it's own trusters. Second of all, the Energia rocket that was supposed to serve as propulsion, could be shut down in case of failure, to save the ship from destruction. Energia alone could have been used also for other purposes. Finally, Buran had fully autonomous autopilot, that could take the shuttle to the orbit, navigate through whole flight, and land it on it's own. And it did.

The Buran was a better shuttle than what the Americans had. Unlike the Shuttle, the Buran could complete its mission entirely on Auto pilot. It is a darn shame that the Americans didn't buy this shuttle. Instead, it was allowed to rot in some warehouse!
@Hannodb196112 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was copied and improved, yes, it was with later technology, but that does not change the fact that it was a better vehicle. And it was left to rot because the soviet union collapsed, and a lot of things was left to rot due to instability and lack of finance. The demise of the Buran is not its own fault, but it is rather a victim of an unstable political system.
