ABOUT TIK 📝
History isn’t as boring as some people think, and my goal is to get people talking about it. I also want to dispel the myths and distortions that ruin our perception of the past by asking a simple question - “But is this really the case?”. I have a 2:1 Degree in History and a passion for early 20th Century conflicts (mainly WW2). I’m therefore approaching this like I would an academic essay. Lots of sources, quotes, references and so on. Only the truth will do.

I think doing the occasional long QA video is just fine. They are interesting and entertaining which is about all you can ask for. Also, just because you might be mostly reiterating points from other videos doesn't make it a bad thing. Learning takes repetition so hearing important facts and concepts applied again in a new context improves understanding.

Agreed. For at least some of us, me at least, we come for TIK's analysis. This has nothing to do with the tanks vs. banks dialectic. For me, tanks only exist because there's an economy that can create them and a political situation that makes them necessary. So there is no 'tanks vs. banks'. They are two sides of the same coin. You cannot understand the one without understanding the other.

Language and translation are EXTREMELY tricky to get right (I grew up speaking two languages, I now speak about five and teach foreign languages at school). Speaking and understanding are arguably some of the most subtle and complex things we do as humans. Google translate or deeple can be a great tool, but to get it right you need to understand a bit about how the other languages works, so that you can then analyse sections in detail. You can for example translate everything to quickly sift through the text, and find important passages. Once you find such a passage, you need to analyse it carefully either yourself, or with help. Checking the meaning of each word, the grammar, and the sentence structure should (hopefully) let you get a good understanding. This works, but it's tedious. Languages are hard.
@orksy2935
@orksy2935 Жыл бұрын
I agree, google is especially bad at giving translations for formal and informal speech, let alone nuance. Also, if TIK reads this, I'm studying Russian and know that digital translator's are near useless without some understanding of the language, if I meet anyone who'd be interested in helping your research by translating, is there any particular way you'd want them to get in touch?

@@TheImperatorKnight You said you over promised and under delivered. Remember Ancient Rome, though having declined for multiple reasons, suffered from hypertrophy. They kept expanding and increasingly struggled to defend their borders. You’re now very well-positioned. “You can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time.” ~ I have no idea Limiting supply limits demand. People just want to know what to expect. Updates, intentions and asking for audience feedback shows respect. Once you make decisions and announce your intentions, you interact in these comments and that’s appreciated. You gave an honest, direct answer to the inquiry regarding a novel. I suggest delivering the truth with such candor. It SUCKS for most people and so it’s refreshing. People don’t like to be the first with their hand raised or first on the dance floor, so forthrightness is more often appealing than not. NOW… I’m not yet a monetary supporter but greatly value your work and do hope you’re safeguarding the originals in multiple locations. Lastly, I love the British humor that’s unexpected due to infrequency and casual nature: “Sooo… revolve? Revolution? Get it?” It’s funny when you’ve just been serious for a good while and then “…blah blah blah” lol I don’t know who you were reading but that was classic. Makes me think of Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes. Watson, “Ghosts don’t go about stabbing people in the neck, do they?” Holmes, “Not… well-bred ghosts, Watson.”

I am a history teacher in a UK secondary school and I can whole heartedly report that in our school we teach a year 9 unit which covers the dictatorship and democracy, before at least one lesson on the phoney war and Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, Barbarossa, Stalingrad, Pearl Harbour, D-day and the atomic bombs. Each of those is at least a one hour lesson. The problem is that the National Curriculum emphasises themes (concepts) to be developed rather than content, and therefore students experiences of history at KS3 will vary widely between schools. Our school is very thorough, but as a result we don't teach units that other schools do. This is the first time I have ever commented on a video on KZbin for fear of Internet trolls. I hope my comments don't upset anyone.

If you want to see a *really* pro-Russian (actually pro-Soviet) World War II documentary, check out "The Unknown War." "The Unknown War" was an American television documentary series made with the cooperation of the Soviet government, and hosted by Burt Lancaster. The series does feature a lot of Soviet combat film footage and interviews with lots of interviews with Soviet military and civilian official. However, the documentary is very heavily tilted in favor of the USSR's official narrative...no mention is made of the Stalinist purges in the 1930s that weakened the Red Army. The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact is glossed over. Obviously, no mention is made of the Katyn massacre or other Soviet war crimes.

@TIK, I will provide you with one example where my history degree has been extremely advantageous. I work in the aviation industry and it is shockingly sad that my engineering, management, and program management colleagues do not read or cross reference the complex customer, industry, and regulatory requirements on how to build commercial and military aircraft and subcomponents. I use history techniques of references sources and locations (document numbers, page numbers, paragraphs) to end wasteful idiocy of people talking out of their ass and wasting peoples time. History techniques have also taught me to look at direct sources, evidence, and non-emotional understanding of the debate to just present facts and best summary of the data. I would not agree completely that history degree is worthiness. It maybe worthless to get a highly economic potential in the free markets, but history degree did teach me to think and analysis information which has served me well.
@TheImperatorKnight

My question is, though, could you not have learnt those skills without taking a history degree? Someone like yourself, or me, or someone else, could teach these skills on KZbin. And you've got to admit that these skills don't require three years in university and thousands of pounds in debt to teach. Using multiple sources, references, trying to understand all sides of a debate... I mean, in theory, I could probably teach all that within an hour or two.

@@TheImperatorKnight Based on my mechanical/electrical engineering education experience, this type of documentational and study techniques analysis was missing. It was more math and practice then root cause analysis or critical thinking (which is more industry practice experience). I agree its easy to learn, but hard to understand unless you see the victims of bias over and over, because history shows it over and over and does a better job of exposing the issues and problems to help the rest of your life. Note, my university knowledge is dated and I graduated in 1990s and I can not speak to ever every university and every engineering degree. I would say university history classes did a great job rounding my educations as human being and I am thankful and I have found it very helpful. I agree economically a history degree is poor return on investment. Still a long term Patreon support and will continue to be so.

Also, with your education come some levels of credibility and integrity. Additionally, while getting educated you meet many people with same ideas/interests and completely new ways of approaching them which broadens your sense of the theme a lot. On the other hand, I understand that education system isn't functioning in your country and that it's too expensive for what it's offering but that's most capitalistic thing that exists - you have to pay for your education and how much you pay that much you get.

As someone producing videos for a Hebrew philologist for an English audience, along with a volunteer Spanish translation team... I must say even your emphatic explanation of the language barrier issue is massively understated. There is so much at play that never crosses most peoples' minds, especially monoglots and people with little experience outside their social bubble. On top of that, even two people from the same background speaking the same dialect of the same language will each have their own "language," so to speak. I've always made it a point to try to learn someone's personal "language" so I can communicate my thoughts more effectively to them, and lose as little in translation as possible. It can take a lot of time to really pin that down, though the more you practice the faster you can pick up on certain elements with new people. The larger and more diverse and audience you're speaking to, the less you can tailor your message to those individual quirks. You can try to cover as many bases as reasonably possible, but it will only land with so much of the audience. Frankly, I think that's why it's so necessary to have numerous voices repackaging the same information differently-- certain ones will reach certain people more effectively. The best antidote to this issue is for each of us to try to remember to interpret each others' words in good faith. Recognize that there are a number of legitimate possible interpretations of what someone is trying to convey, and work to ascribe to them the strongest of those, while also hedging for the weaker ones. Of course, you can only do that yourself, and hopefully inspire the same in the other party. If they still insist on lazy, bad-faith interpretation anyway, it's on them.

This, of course, is assuming that the other party is actually at least somewhat interested in being fair and finding the truth; if they just laugh at you and make fun of your attempts to be fair, then just walk away, because no real debate is actually happening.

TIK - please keep doing these long form videos. I’ve been watching you for years and have yet to tackle most of the Battlestorm series specifically because I usually listen to your content while making dinner or driving and feel the Battlestorm videos deserve the full attention to both the audio and the visuals. These kinds of longer Q&A videos let me explore various topics - some which you’ve covered previously and some that are totally new - while getting the same quality and quantity of information from you even if you feel that they aren’t as researched as you’d like (I appreciate that you have such an exacting standard and hold yourself even more accountable than you do other historians). Also, for what it’s worth, I truly enjoy your “Bank” releases. I got very into Austrian economics and voluntaryism about 7 or 8 years ago and, while definitely jaded and discouraged about the feasibility markets opening up rather than doubling down on state control in the near future, I really love hearing your perspective as you’ve started to include economic and social history into your work. I was also originally a rugged “left” socialist who turned to individualism after reading Mises and Hayek, though I had an embarrassing National Socialist period for many years in between the two. Please don’t stop doing what you’ve been doing, your videos are truly some of the most valuable history content on KZbin, and easily some of the best-researched content on the site just in general. Very, very, very few people put the amount of time and effort into each video that you do, and I don’t know a single one which comes close that isn’t also doing so with a much larger staff and budget on top of capitalizing on merch and other avenues that aren’t desirable or realistic for you. I've watched soviet storm in English and Russian, multiple times each. To say that the translation into English deviates from the Russian is an understatement, whole sentences seem to have disappeared in the English version and often it seems like a direct dictionary translation with no accounting for differences in meaning. There are also parts just strait up removed in the English version also. The Russian version does have a slide showing that it was funded by the Russian ministry of culture, it would be hard for any Russian, including those who are full on Putin loving nationalists, to mistake it as an unbiased account. (It wouldn't have received such funding if it wasn't deemed by the Russian state to serve some kind of value in propaganda.)

Most subjects, particularly mathematics are learned incrementally, with preceding concepts being built upon and expanded as ones education progresses. Additionally, when you're young, you lack the experience or wisdom to assign value to a particular subject. Grammar for instance, is dry and boring to most schoolchildren, yet it equips one to think coherently and communicate effectively. I would guarantee most adults will consider their English language lessons useless, yet they benefit unwittingly from it in their adult life. Furthermore, learning about those Chinese communism (of all subjects) sounds like a useful piece of historical information given modern culture, domestic and geopolitics?

"Long time fan here and I do feel guilty for not being a Patreon of yours. I am struggling financially with this CPI being over 10% since JULY 2022!" Don't feel guilty. You cannot help others until you help yourself. Right now is a very difficult time for a lot of people, and while I think we could all do with more money, I'm not starving. So I'd rather you look after yourself first and get yourself into a comfortable position before you even consider sending a dollar my way. On this note, I would encourage you to watch Aaron Clarey's videos (link in description). He's an educated economist (but not woke, he's the opposite), and his content (including his books) can really help you financially, but also in general. - "I really don't want to find myself in 2030, being happy and owning nothing... definitely will never move to Oxford." I'm not saying you should do it, and you should definitely do your own reading and research before you do, but in order to avoid the "own nothing" crowd, a little bit of gold and silver can go a long way. You'll need your side hustle up and running first though... but it's something to consider for when you have LONG TERM savings. - "You've been a socialist and you now know the cure." That's the problem, I don't think I do. You cannot give people the "Red Pill", they have to want to take it themselves, which they don't want to do. That's why I often complain that my critics aren't listening, because they're not. - "I am now sure that this is your calling. Don't give up..." I need to figure out a way to make them listen. If I can do that, I can get through to them. But I need help with this. - "don't criticise the establishment" But I want too! 😂 - "Don't forget that you are addressing a lot of people that don't take the time to criticise you." I also know you were being sarcastic when you said that, and I wanted to come across the same way. (I will write this comment on my laptop to avoid typos from my autocorrect. It's like my phone has an agenda of its own. LOL). I'm with you on the precious metals and love the BBP screenshot you showed in this video. I made it a habit of investing, and I remember when I was first looking, gold was under £1k. Silver was also almost 1/2 the price of what it is now. This was 2019. The Oxford comment came from the WEF's plan of 15 min Neighbourhoods. "That's the problem, I don't think I do. You cannot give people the "Red Pill", they have to want to take it themselves, which they don't want to do. That's why I often complain that my critics aren't listening, because they're not." You can't cos the "every man is an island" applies to us wanting to better ourselves as well. I was a socialist, and I still work on it daily. Realistically, not many are willing to spend so much time "swallowing the red pill". But those who feel like something is wrong with society nowadays, they might be interested even if they don't do anything about it. "I need to figure out a way to make them listen. If I can do that, I can get through to them. But I need help with this." I would love to help you with this one. I was born in Romania, and I know what people in a socialist country think of capitalism. But it's up to them to put in the work. And as you well pointed out, Russia hasn't experienced freedom for more than 100 years, it would take generations for them to be open enough to a different perspective. "But I want too! 😂" I also want you to talk about nowadays. So many people need to hear the crazy similarities between the buildup to WW2 and what's happening nowadays. It's amazing that while more countries are joining the BRICS and Saudi A is ditching the Petrodollar as we speak, the Americans are force-fed some BS news about Trump getting arrested. Good thing that OPEC isn't announcing anything about reducing the supply of oil... OH WAIT!... "I don't want to just be preaching to the choir." I agree. Again, I think you're doing an excellent job. And I hope you can get more help to cut down on the production time. Thank you so much, TIK. I really hope to meet you in person one day. I remember you rode a motorcycle at some point. If you still have your licence, I have 4 x Honda C90s, and you can borrow one of mine to ride around and relax. Would be so much fun, haha. I was also fascinated by WW2 in school, and we got more than Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Romania. Much more. From the alliances, the Ribbentrop-Molotov pact that carved Romania, to the oil that we gave to the Germans and the huge amount of casualties on the eastern front. Quite strange that the UK was so poor on that topic. Good to know and interesting to compare the two. Have a great rest of the week.

The thing is, language isn't just written. it's spoken, and depending on things like tone, accents, dialects, and intent, a word can be used differently. To top this off, this is not the case in all languages or dialects. Sometimes, local culture can even give a word a different use. It's why people who even speak the same language can misunderstand each other when texting because it's not a natural conversation (face to face).

I 100% agree with you about education, particularly history. Going to university is a massive waste of time and money. The only reason why governments insist people in their 20s go to university is simply to keep their unemployment figures low. The only reason you should go to university is if you are studying something related to medicine, OR in the case of the arts, if you go to a very specialist school like RADA, or one of those Viennese art schools. Your basic run of the mill colleges and universities with their run of the mill courses are a waste of three years for a scrap of paper that no employer gives a damn about.

This proved very useful when I was in the Army. History? I learnt more history (mainly military history) from reading articles in wargames magazines than I ever did at school, in fact I can't remember any of my school history now. I was in the army during the mid-709's stationed in West Germany. Your vids have made me very uncomfortable about what we were told about the Soviets then. Basically the German General Staff 'lie like cheep NAAFI carpet'. But everyone back then believed everything they said! I'll stop now coz I'm beginning to ramble. Thanks for all your hard work.

Excellent Cast! Very informed, educational and entertaining! Top shelf, AGAIN! Yes the "What if they did...or they didn't..." One has to remember, if the Germans did something different then the Russians would also had done something to counter. Imo, the best thing overall the Germans could have done would have been to plan for total war at the starting gun and set their army up for attrition war in addition to their overall maneuver strategy. Oh, and put a foot in Halder's arse to correctly resupply Armee Group South esp the 6th Armee! Again, imo. Thanks for the cast!

Thanks Tik, I enjoyed this video Just a thought about the "usefulness of wrongness". I know you are a fan of the debate. Sometimes a wrong or silly idea is expressed in a debate. In response, a new idea might be developed, sometimes only thought of because the previously expressed alternative was useless. Thus through uselessness a bad idea can actually be useful .

Tik is great historian, he should work and have his emission for History Channel or Viasat History. If he have time he should do the video about Soviet pilots who helped Chinese nationalist against Japan from 1937 to 1941. Tik is real expert in Soviet military history in that period.

"Nice" to hear that You had a very similar of UTTER disappointment by Your history teacher as I had ... but You might also have been the only one of all Your fellow classmates who took that further. Most would have abandoned history forever ... only very few have interest, especially for "filthy details" like You. Please continue, we love it!

I had three years (!) of the Industrial Revolution. OK for a few weeks, but for that long? Boring.

@@sillypuppy5940 I think I can agree. That would be the counter extreme of our experience. But: in WHICH country would anyone teach Industrial revolution for three years, instead of 3 hours ... or three minutes? In my case it was actually zero at all.

"Be curious and ask me to explain it." Best advice that everyone on the internet could take. Fascinating age distribution of your viewers. I am 62 and have been reading history for a very long time, including plenty on WWII. I really like your analysis and methods. Even if I spent the rest of my life reading, I would never catch up to you. There is always going to be some difficulty with all the idioms in the English language. Today's culture isn't helping when they make "what is a woman?" a trick question.

Great video as always TIK! Question: do you have any interest in the Pacific War and how the Japanese conducted their operations in China/South Pacific? It seems like an interesting thing to cover.

I majored in history at a Lafayette College in the US. I took courses in Tudor-Stuart England and Latin America. I was taught by a wonderful faculty who taught me how to read and process what I read. I minored in education. The big difference between my experience and recent college graduates is that I graduated in 1969. I learned how to think for myself and to analyze what I read. My degree served me well over the years and I held senior management positions in the Conference Center and Resort Industries. I do agree with much of what you are saying, and you've opened my eyes to the state of education today. I think business and scientific degrees still have some merit. I paid $3,600 a year for tuition. No college debt because I could earn that all in 6 months. I was raised at a time when Rommel was admired. (I won't get into the Civil War). My opinions have changed. Listening to your videos has shown me the value of my college education. I am open to new information and discussion that challenges my long-held beliefs. I love your videos and admire what you do. Keep it up TIK!

I can say that a history degree has use when you want to teach it in school. I got lucky that my professor, who ran the whole thing, allowed me to explore mostly whatever I wanted. So far I have been telling the students I encounter in my training that they need to read from multiple sources and perspectives. I hope to include some of your videos in my teaching materials.

It's hard for me to fully explain how much I appreciate your content TIK. Your videos on the war are better than some of the programs and documentaries I watched growing up, but it's your content surrounding the ideologies of the 20th century, as well as the economics, that are some of your best work. Not to sound too much like a fanboy, but your work has always been insightful and engaging, and I always look forward to your next video, even these long Q&As.

It's definitely a good decision, that you don't rely on Google Translate to translate entire sentences. Especially with German, this might cause you a whole lot of problems, because of its sentence structure and overall grammar.

I'm so please I listened all the way through. A whole lot of interesting subjects were touched, and each would make good discussion on their own. On education then the basics to age 14, done in school, I still maintain is important. Home schooling just can't give the social interaction that a playground can give. Many homes, parents, just don't have the teaching skills to teach let alone the academia to give a wide enough curriculum. Heck, not all teachers have it even. Anyhow, another good TIK input. I visited the Soviet Union when I was 19 in 1984. Big Brother propaganda there was so obviously disconnected to reality. There really were empty shelves in the convenience stores of Moscow.
