Originally made by the Soviet Union, this propaganda film was re-released by the American C.I.A. complete with English narration. It features wargames known as Ocean-70 performed by the Soviet fleet. The exercise took place between 14th April and 5th of May 1970. It was conducted under the command of Admiral Gorshkov, commander in Chief of the Soviet Navy. Depicted are various types of the contemporary Soviet surface navy materiel, Soviet Navy airforce and air reconnaissance, Soviet Marines and their amphibious assault vehicles, and the first generation of the Soviet navy nuclear and non-nuclear submarines - November, Echo and Foxtrot types. The latest (commissioned 1968-1970) Soviet navy nuclear submarines do not appear in this movie. The classified part of this exercise involved the search for the sunken K-8 submarine, which foundered in the bay of Biscay on April 12th 1970 (not portrayed, understandably).
Here are some highlights:

12:06 to 12:19 AA ship artillery mount, at 12:16 showing an airplane identification diagram on the mount's wall by the gunner's side13:07 KS-1 "Raduga" (NATO ID "Kennel") nuclear-ready anti-ship-missile based on MiG-15

Digitalenko" ... what? I don't think it's a real name. 15:54 BTR-60 Armored Personnel Carrier, probably 16:00 - 16:10 BMD-1 Infantry Fighting Vehicle of the Soviet Marines Corps 16:12 T-54-based Tracked Military tractor, which also served as a Common Chasis Platform for most tracked exploration and winterized tracked vehicles 16:28 Tu-16 ("Badger") or Yak-28 ("Brewer") flying in formation 17:55 onwards - BMD-1 doing what they're supposed to do. 18:08 A T-54/T-55 tank, accompanied by a couple of BMD-1 18:13 Trying to kill a tank with an assault rifle. FPS-style, as a Battlefield Series veteran, I'd advise to use a sidearm and aim roughly to the place where the tank driver clips out of the tank XD 18:32 Marshal Grechko, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrei_Grechko 19:14 Project 641 "Foxtrot" diesel attack submarine followed, again, by 627/"November" at 19:21 It would help if someone with knowledge of identifying warships could tag the types of warships diplayed in this movie.

The BMD-1 was not used by the Soviet Navy, they were only used by the VDV. Those tanks in 16:00-16:10 are PT-76B's

Nice historical film, this is the Soviet Navy when it was a threat , propaganda is a weapon, even for a 1970 film.

1970 film. I joined the US Navy in 1971. The Soviet Navy was showing some weaknesses. The 1973 Israeli Yom Kippur war had the US and Soviet saber rattling in the eastern Mediterranean. A lot of ships involved from both sides. I left my ship in October, 1975, 2 years later from a separate cruise. There were still a lot of Soviet ships anchored at the open shallow anchorages still waiting to be towed back to the Black Sea bases.

Backfire supersonic bombers, what looks like either a Victor or maybe even an Alfa class nuclear attack submarine....And yet from this, it looks as if the Soviets made no advances in the technology film or video cameras since around the time Eisenstein shot The Battleship Potemkin.

@@rickb1973 A "November" sub with their typical upper hemisphere sonar tiling. When watching Soviet documentaries - even those for internal fleet training - you shouldn't expect them to show "the latest" submarines. Generally, all the information was provided on a need-to-know basis. Only senior commanding officers (Admiral-leutenant and above) actually knew which submarine types the navy had, either by serving on them or commanding them. In addition to that - this documentary being from 1970 they couldn't have shown 705 Lyra because it wasn't commissioned until 1971.
