When children in the townships of Soweto hang out at the playground they use it as an open, free-thinking place where they come together to relieve the tensions of everyday life. The playground is a place where they share their stories through creative games and fun, while at the same time they learn skills to survive in the street.
In Soweto in the 1950s, commuters developed a dance style known as ‘isparapara’ inspired by their jumping on and off of moving trains. This was mixed with tap dance and later became known as Pantsula.
More than a dance, Pantsula is a lifestyle. Influences can be seen in jazz, breaking, popping, house and bone breaking.
This is a rare opportunity to see Pantsula from some of South Africa’s leading practitioners in their first ever UK performance!

Pantsula is still going strong. Many crews in Gauteng. They just need support. Please search Pantsula Show Juste Debout 2019. It's the biggest Dance competition in France with prelims held over 4 continents. The finalists the compete at grand finals in Paris. Last year our boys was a guest act on the show. They also used DJ Spice and our music for the House Dance Division. During one battle I heard them play Omunye of Distruction Boyz The winners were Tony Ray and Caleaf from USA. Caleaf does fundamental House dancing and he is a dance instructor. Tony Ray madè me laugh, because he hit them with Pantsula moves throughout the rounds.
