After the devastating news of Scott Hutchison's death in May, the internet was flooded with stories of his generosity, humor and kindness. His beautiful lyrics remain to attest to his longtime struggles with depression and anxiety, but I wanted to make something to highlight the witty, silly side of Scott that fans knew and loved and that I imagine Scott would want to be remembered for.
There was no "rock star" vibe with Scott, who could usually be found chatting with fans at the merch table after shows. He had a great relationship with his audience, further evidenced in his honest and hilarious banter between songs. In solo performances he often humored any and all requests from the audience...even if he only sort of remembered the lyrics. And he occasionally played that song he hates (YOU know the one), not because he enjoyed it but because he knew the fans got a kick out of it.
Clinical depression is complicated. Sometimes those suffering from it are the funniest people you know, whether it's because they find joy in making others laugh or because they know that life can be difficult and absurd and sometimes all you can do is laugh about it. As Scott once pointed out, "Turns out a lot of stand up comedians love Frightened Rabbit. I think we're all depressed at heart." In recent weeks there have been dozens of stories from fans of conversations they had in person or via email with Scott in which he talked candidly about his own battle and offered support and a friendly ear to those who needed it. (recommended: podcart.co/the-...)
As his family described so eloquently in their statement: "Scott, like many artists, wore his heart on his sleeve and that was evident in the lyrics of his music and the content of many of his social media posts. He was passionate, articulate and charismatic, as well as being one of the funniest and kindest people we knew. Friends and family would all agree that he had a brilliant sense of humour and was a great person to be around. In addition to his musical success, Scott was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend. Despite whatever else was going on in his life he always had time for those he cared for.
Depression is a horrendous illness that does not give you any alert or indication as to when it will take hold of you. Scott battled bravely with his own issues for many years and we are immensely proud of him for being so open with his struggles. His willingness to discuss these matters in the public domain undoubtedly raised awareness of mental health issues and gave others confidence and belief to discuss their own issues."
Journalist Josh Modell wrote: "There’s no doubt that Hutchison’s music-and soul-made those tiny, positive changes to Earth during his too-brief 36 years...I’m confident that he would want to be remembered not for the painful moment or manner in which he left, but for the moments of catharsis, joy, and understanding that his music fostered while he was still here...Let’s do what he suggested in one of his final tweets: Be so good to everyone you love.'" bit.ly/2LKdJLq
So, in addition to clips of silly banter with the audience and funny moments of brotherly harassment between Scott and Grant, there are also appearances by his friends James Graham (of The Twilight Sad...and the Hall to Scott's Oates!), Louis Abbott (Admiral Fallow), Frank Turner, Josh Ritter, Neil Pennycook (Meursault) and Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra) and Billy, Andy, Simon and Gordon (and Scott's mum!). As an avid music fan, Scott loved the opportunity to pay tribute to his favorite bands, so there are also clips of him talking about/covering bands like Neutral Milk Hotel, The National, The Lemonheads, Death Cab, LCD Soundsystem, Best Coast, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and more. And, of course, enjoying a quality shot of whiskey (and the dreaded Balkan)...
I hope this video puts a smile on your face as it did mine when I was putting it together.
Not for commercial purposes. No copyright infringement intended. Just a fan video to remember an awesome guy. I tried to give credit by making a playlist of all the clips I borrowed from: bit.ly/2K6tUxt (with the exception of vimeo.com/2082... and some live videos from Michelle of "The Group.")
Also, Scott's old roommate that is briefly pictured wrote a really beautiful piece about him: bit.ly/2Lurgax
Ok, this caption is getting way too long, sorry lol Go forth, be kind, make tiny changes, etc.

So sad for his family. His poor parents. What a major talent. Loved the Rabbit since I first heard them around 2007. Now have their brilliant albums on vinyl. Easily one of the greatest bands of the last 20 years, from any country. RIP Scott. Thank you for putting this together. A lot of work. Great job.

Thanks, AJ, I'm happy you enjoyed it ❤️ He was a major talent indeed, on so many levels. If you haven't already seen it, his parents/brothers just finished compiling a book of his artwork, dating back to his art school days. It's called Living in Colour. Definitely worth checking out, it's really beautiful!

Great video , I lost my big brother a few years back he was 48 at the time so not old. I know how Grant feels losing Scott. Shame I only listened to them after Scotts passing. Easily one of the great Scottish bands. Sleep easy Scotty.

Frightened Rabbit just goes to show that if you share your darkness, so many people can relate to you for the same reason. There is no need to keep that to yourself and suffer alone.

Wow, you're so nice, thank you!! Are you going? I wish I could be there to see the tribute - I'm really hoping they'll post it online somewhere after. By the way, I LOVED your Snafu videos, as you can probably tell haha I don't think I used clips from all of them but I included all four parts in the playlist I linked to because they were just so good :)
