Notice that when she thought of Gastón, she was smiling and when she thought of Eric, she wasn't anymore. This is a sign that of there was a season 4, her and Gastón would find a way to be together again or at least that she still loves him

Nina just saw Eric as a friend in the beginning because she was in a relationship with Gaston but as soon as Gaston and her broke up that’s when Nina start to have feelings for Eric

I think this very clearly shows that the makers of the show knew they could do better than Eric. These are carefully chosen clips of Gaston. They were chosen to portray Nina and Gaston's relationship as just cute, nothing special, and Nina and Eric's relationship as passionate and one of the kind. In reality, they are reversed. Gaston and Nina had a very deep, mature, and serious relationship (she was ready to move to England for him). Gaston was his own person before Felicity was even invented, he was so much more than Nina's love interest, he was Mateo's best friend, part of the roller team, popular but had his feet on the ground. Eric in reality has no substance, I give him that, he is cute but like a Puppy. These are not the scenes that Nina would be thinking of when she would be thinking Gaston. They didn't include any of their four kisses, nothing of Felicity, no Ambar's party and dancing with the blindfold, not any of the iconic scenes where they bump into each other and she drops her books, not the almost kiss scene in the lockers or not even the scene where he sends her the message where he declares his love for the last attempt to get her to stay and then they run to each other. Gaston doesn't get any lines because anything he says like: "my dream is to be with you", "when I look at the stars, I'll think of you", "It doesn't matter if they are thousands of kilometers between us we'll always be together", "I could never be away from you" or "the sea will keep our names" would throw Eric's "My dream is that we won't be interrupted". They didn't include any of these scenes because none of Nina's scenes with Eric would come to even close, and I guess this scene was supposed to be the scene where she chooses Eric.
