SP 4449 in Wisconsin and Illinois

Southern Pacific 4449, a restored Daylight 4-8-4 steam locomotive that pulled fast passenger trains between Los Angeles and San Francisco around the middle of the 20th century, was captured at four locations as part of a roundtrip from Portland, OR (her home) and Owosso, MI for a steam locomotive convention. A monopod was used at the first 3 locations, so there is a bit of "waviness" in those scenes.

The whistle on 4449 always got my attention. But the air horn does seem to be louder. I guess that's why they used it on the coast during foggy conditions.

The long telephoto shots of the engine are nice, but the photographer being right on the right of way - just feet from a 250 ton locomotive and 10 or more 80 ton cars - demonstrates how little an understanding of railroading and safety around machinery most people have.

@DocXmas - I'm a volunteer with the 4449 and the air horn only comes out when Doyle gets really pissed. Were people doing something stupid out of frame?

Doyle used the air horn numerous times when it was en route from Portland to Sacramento in 1991

Amtrak Dash-8s Make the steam loco 3X-4X Faster, then it hits speed.

Amtrak's are there to serve 3 purposes. 1. Power to the cars 2. Dynamic braking system to help the main locomotive 3. If the steamer fails, the Amtrak works as a backup locomotive to bring the passengers and cargo to the destination safely.
