A simple recipe for Mung Dal (also known as Moong Dal)
Ingredients:
- 1 cup split mung dal (yellow lentils)
- 3 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 green chili, chopped (adjust to your spice preference)
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions:
1. Wash the mung dal thoroughly and drain.
2. In a large pot, add the dal, water, turmeric, and salt. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until the dal is soft and fully cooked (about 20-30 minutes). You may need to add more water if it becomes too thick.
3. In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
4. Add minced garlic and sauté until it's aromatic and slightly golden.
5. Add chopped onions and cook until they turn translucent.
6. Stir in chopped tomatoes and green chili. Cook until the tomatoes become soft and oil starts to separate.
7. Add red chili powder and garam masala. Stir well.
8. Pour this tempering mixture into the cooked dal and mix thoroughly. Simmer for a few more minutes.
9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
10. Serve your delicious Mung Dal with rice or roti.
Enjoy your homemade Mung Dal!
