You're right Rudy, it really does hurt that local stores where you can go to an FnM or just to enjoy a game of magic and it's like they have no support from Wizards of the Coast. Edit : the local stores are the ones that support their local community of players 100%. They get no backing and take all the risk, it's not right man.

Stores are outdated. Gaming clubs are where its at. Monthly dues.. pooling of money to buy products. Its the best model. Overhead is insanely low. Talk to local Masonic..Elk...lodges etc etc. They're more than happy to accommodate gaming clubs!

6:34 - 6:45 Not only does it expose how weak the collectable world is, this entire situation has exposed how massive sectors of our economy and way of life are incredibly weak. The number of people I know who are completely broke after just two weeks of no income, along with the impact on bars, restaurants, the airline industry and hotels is absolutely shocking in my view. It appears that most Americans and most of our economy runs on zero margin of error with no backup plan. Hopefully people learn their lesson from this situation and stop living paycheck to paycheck, payday to payday, quarter to quarter and start thinking about the future. Our entire civilization is clearly not healthy and needs serious retooling.

It would sure be nice to have some sort of way to boost out of subsistence to the point where it's possible to plan for the future. The main issue is that right now it's taking everything I have just to survive. There's no time or energy left to hope or dream or strategize. I play magic to escape and now I can't even do that

@@ScornfulEg0tist With all due respect, you can't make BOTH claims that you're struggling to survive (no spare time or money) and use MTG (a luxary item of entertainment value) to escape. Your comment proves my point. It appears that too many Americans and American companies have their values, goals and beliefs askew. Look, either you have disposable income and time for activities like MTG or you don't. You may wish to fool yourself but you can't fool me. Good luck with your situation. I would suggest you reevaluate your beliefs and perceptions.

Small LGS owner from Brazil here. We are closed down and don't have plans to re-open the store. By the end of 2015 me and my friend decided to open a magic store. Now we have 60 empty chairs and a lot of product that currently nobody wants to buy. Despite the constant fight against Wizards/Local Distributors/Brazillian Customs trying mess up everything everytime, we were steadily growing. Some ups, some downs, but overall it was good. And then, the end of 2019 was bad. Theros Before Death was very bad. After that, the cost of products increased by 20% due to the devaluation of our currency. And Covid-19 was the last straw. Unfortunately now we just can't make it. It was very fun and stressful while my LGS lasted, but now it's time to move on. Will keep watching your videos, thanks for being an amazing creator!

This is why hotels have conference halls. That overhead is a bitch. We did the same at a company worked for. We bought a bigger space to have our own classroom instead of renting the conference room. It gets to the point that the 6k rental is worth it if you save 20k over the year in overhead. You can have three rentals and still be ahead. Also, our culture has been scarred. Luckily for us, we have a small circle that loves playing with a nostalgic feel. Our crew loved playing release events but that might never happen again. Idk bro. It's painful.

Hi Rudy - funny enough, I really liked this raw video (not because of the topic, but with how genuine and informative it was). I really could connect with what you are seeing and dealing with. These topics must be discussed so people know what the collector businesses are going through (or small business in general). Nows the time to do whatever possible to support our local card shops. By the way, I started a Yugioh investment channel and found your channel - very inspirational for me and I’ll be a longtime subscriber.

Also, many people like to play competitive face-to-face TCGs under the official organized play. So, I know there will still be LGGs with space to play, even if it's minimal. I learned through the comments of your own videos that successful stores don't depend on MTG, and they use high diversification, so they do other TCGs, wargames, boardgames (not with FFG), figures, singles, and other products... So, if one of those goes down, the others are there to keep the business up.

I’m pretty close to the owner of my LGS (as in, I hang out with him socially doing things that have nothing to do with hobbies/gaming). Fortunately for him, our area has a large comic book following. He’s told me multiple times that with the profit he makes off comic books each month, it basically pays his rent. While he’s had to suspend open/organized play, and no doubt this will hurt his pockets, the fact that his storefront is still open combined with his sales of comics will at least keep the lights on until things get better.

I work one day a week for a local comic/gaming store...comics take up a STUPID amount of space and you get stuck with SOOOOO much backstock...the only way I'd do it (if I owned it) would be to take a poll of all the people who have sub boxes and make sure they keep up on their lists as a new Previews comes out and if they (with a minimal stock on the shelf) would add up to the minimum Diamond requires a week to buy from them (which is $500 or more) THEN and only then would I continue to carry comics (Again this is if I owned/was in charge of the business). Board games are another that take up a crapton of space. If you're starting a gamestore from the ground up, be very weary of carrying a mass variety of games. Have a few of the impulse buy staples, but you don't need 20 different varieties of Munchkin, etc.

I had the philosophy that once the crisis calms down enough that game stores will start up again since many more people will want to play at a store with their friends like "old times" that way of thinking is what's been pushing me into into trying to plan out a store of my own. Evidently I haven't thought of the more important factors at hand.

Great video as always Rudy. Yes this Black swan event is a game changer but I'm an optimist. People and business models will change and evolve. Future lgs stores may start forming local consortiums or collectives to share profits within each city like NFL or MLB sports. To increase and leverage purchasing power in volume. Maybe have local vendors like pizza hut become sponsors of tournaments

I agree, globally this has effected everyone and even if it doesn't get so bad to the point people start dropping like fly's and starts actually getting better...it's gonna be different for awhile regardless because it's like we were all driving at 90 miles an hour buying and selling everything like it was on fire and then screeeeeeeeeech (accidental horn honk) everything stopped..and it's gonna take time for people to get back to normal cause nobody wants to be that first person to make a mistake until you have a few people who are crazy(or smart) enough to stay the course for others to follow suit and get the buying power back..things like this change everything even just the slightest bit but you can and will be able to say without a doubt "before all this happened" if you know what I mean.

This is a Black Swan event to the levels of the 1929 market crash. Businesses will shut down, people will struggle, there'll be anger, sadness, a feeling of wanting to cling onto what you knew and worked in the past. But all that is gone, and it's time to move on, and times will change, and it will change people, governments, societies. Just remember that every storm runs out of rain eventually. Soldier on, chin up, do your best with what you can. Keep being real Rudy, it's hard enough as it is to have that in times like this online

I don't know if that's possible in the USA or any other country, but I hope so, because it looks like the best option for those that don't want end their business, but have a pause.

We have a FLGS failing right now due to space AND their backwards ways. They used to be the only FLGS in town and got rid of tables in order to make room for product (really small and cramped store). Last year a new store opened with LOTS of tables. They have events every night and the store is always full. They are more expensive than the old store but they get away with it due to the things they do for the customers and community. So with Corona hitting the new store offers online orders (unlike the old one they have a proper website and online store) and pick up or delivery the same day they announced the quarantine. The old one took 3 days to write like 10 emails to their regulars stating they can order via mail and that they get their orders SOMEHOW. Yeah, as much as it hurts the old store will have a hard comeback. I mean Germany will pay all business some kind of reparation but I'm not sure if it's enough. Can't believe the US don't give a fuck about small business owners.

I own and operate a medium sized LGS that focuses on YuGiOh rather than Mtg because I can’t get a foot in the door due to 21 other stores being open in a city that has a population under 2mil. As a whole this situation has been terrible for business but I can’t help thinking that after this crisis (“black swan event”) is over that i hope many of these other smaller LGS close permanently. Over saturation of LGS has been a terrible issue especially in my area. Players entitlement has come to a head as well. No one wants to drive 10-20 minutes to a store because there was one

I made the decision with my friends to open a shop. We just had our soft open, even though we are stuck because of the virus we do get a few benefit. 1) we get to build cheap stock and 2) our shady competitor have no way to con the locals Just go regular WPN, premium is a scam. Stay the course and pump out volume

I want more of your content like this. You have a very good view on economy, entertainment or not, I agree with many things you are saying. You could start a playlist or other channel with general economical thoughts.

My local game store just announced they are closing. The pandemic response effects were just the cherry on the top of what caused them to go out of business.

Im scared. Tbh. Im 20, not incredibly stable financially, and I have close to 10k in magic. While thats nothing compared to you, its a lot for me. Like seeing modern staples plumet, pioneer staples plumet, its scary because other than 7 duals, a cradle, and a grim, all of the money in my collection is in staples for those fornats, which look like they will get hit the hardest. I just wish wizards would take a step back, and stop selling shit on amazon, walmart, target, and actually try to help keep the system alive.
