CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ethan Glance (Loren Dean) defies Frank's (Clint Eastwood) orders and accidentally activates the satellite carrying 6 nuclear missiles.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this adventure drama, four men passed over by the space program get one last chance to be heroes and live out their dreams. Frank Corvin (Clint Eastwood), Hawk Hawkins (Tommy Lee Jones), Jerry O'Neill (Donald Sutherland), and Tank Sullivan (James Garner) were top pilots within an elite Air Force squadron and on the fast track to becoming the first Americans in space in the early 1950s. However, when NASA was established, the pilots were cut out of the loop; Corvin went on to become an aerospace engineer, Hawkins continued on as a freelance pilot, O'Neill became an astrophysicist with a sideline in designing roller coasters, and Sullivan took up preaching as a Baptist minister. Years later, a Russian satellite's guidance system has started to malfunction, and it is expected to crash into the Earth within a matter of weeks. The system is identical to the one Corvin designed for Skylab, so NASA head Bob Gerson (James Cromwell) asks Corvin to help him with the emergency mission to repair the satellite. Corvin agrees under one condition -- that he be sent up to do the repairs himself, with Hawkins, O'Neill, and Sullivan as his crew. Clint Eastwood directed Space Cowboys while also starring as Frank Corvin; his supporting cast includes Marcia Gay Harden, Courtney B. Vance, Loren Dean, and William Devane.

Would Ethan have been in trouble once he got back to earth is the real question? He disobeyed direct orders and basically caused this catastrophe.

Yes. One, that's the definitive end of his career as an astronaut. Two, he probably would find himself up for charges in front of some sort of tribunal (NASA is a civilian agency, but I'm sure this matter wouldn't find itself in an ordinary courtroom).

Fired for sure and I'm sure there's a case of criminal charges since his error caused the death of a fellow astronaut, not to mention he did disobey orders from a commander. Whether he liked Frank or not, Frank still was his superior.

@@ronaldmackall1621 I believe he was a airmen assigned to NASA or typically referred to as "on loan" so he would more than likely find himself drummed out of NASA and sent to a court marshal for insubordination and reckless endangerment. If they really wanted to stretch it they could reasonable but the death on him since he wouldn't have needed to push those missiles out of orbit if he listened

@@thespeedypatriot6201 As in away from the bottom of the _Daedalus_ Orbiter Vehicle. The late STS-1 and STS-9 Mission Commander John Young himself said that you could lose maybe one or two tiles in a sensitive area and it wouldn't cause a zipper effect. Each tile on a shuttle was supposed to be designed with four to five times the strength they would need for the dynamic pressures of reentry.

At the very minimum he would be, at the maximum, colluding with another country is treason, so his ultimate sentence would be far worse. He would at least be imprisoned for sure since he put the entire crew (not to mention the world) in danger just because he refused to listen to the mission commander.

Centrifugal force ..'Objects in motion tend to stay in motion, until acted upon by an outside force"..and with no gravity it don't take much to push anything. They are still within a minimal pull of Earth, but also getting a bit from the moon..math does strange things here. Several factors co-existing at that point.
