Or, maybe it was abandoned in a shipyard to decay, and was discovered and re-fitted by a junker who had had enough of his planet. Just a background idea, not sure how it would fit...

You said the thrusters burning would make the armor black with carbon deposits. Those are hydrogen thrusters, when you burn(oxidize) hydrogen, you only get water. Buuuut if armor blocks are steel, maybe the heat from the thruster is heating the metal, drawing out impurities and slag.

Or there's residue on the metal from when it visits planets, and that burns, leaving carbon behind

Not likely, unless you crashed it into a forest and still had trees stuck in the metal. There's not many ways you could get that much of a buildup of carbon without burning a carbonizing fuel.

Trees stuck in the metal? I was thinking more like a dusty planet, where it would get all sorts of stuff stuck to it, from sitting for long periods of time... Also would explain the rusty color.

With Thruster Damage on, those atmospheric thrusters directly above the reactors look like a self-destruct mechanism ^^ "Initiating reactor meltdown in 5...4...3..."

My only concern is that rust is a chemical reaction that can only take place with solutions including oxygen and water. Both of which the ship wouldn't make contact with in space. Therefore it would be unlikely/impossible that the ship would rust.

You should look at some more large ships built for battle. I would love to see more battleships, cruisers, frigates and corvettes.

The difference is that these ships are designed to wreck other ships. Which means they are equipped with some really destructive weapons.

this style of ship would look better with [invisible armor edges] on steam workshop as that way the THING I JUST SAID would detract from the coloring of the ship and leave it as a much more natural transition of design
