Space Engineers - Sand Worm Concept

One of my more strange constructions trying to capture as many features of a worm/snake as possible. There still a lot of work to be done primarily getting it out of the tunnels safely.
Disclaimer We have been having some big issues in survival mode we are still working to fix them.

Space Engineer is like a mixture between Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program.
The main purpose of the game seems to be building a space fleet and fight/ally with the other factions. You build your ships piece by piece and the only know limit for the size of your ship is what you computer can handle.

That is the most terrifying vehicle I've ever seen. Imagine building an underground bunker to protect from orbital bombardments, thinking yourself to be safe and secure with all your defenses focused on enemies attacking from above, when suddenly a giant robot worm, large enough to fill a corridor, comes up from beneath your base to gut the undefended vital systems. It's like the Saberoid burrowing mechanic, only a thousand times worse.

Ok picture this. The Spiders on the Alien planet are running around in the caves and out of nowhere a worm-like machine come in from the walls with turrets shooting at them.

Rogue Qall but with tanks the treads are placed on spot then lifted. while with the snake the blocks are draged across the ground

You should make it heavy armor blocks and add reverse thrusters on both ends. Right now your thrusters pull when you need to get out of the hole you dug - Maybe having thrusters at both ends of the ship that act as push thrusters would help. Hard to explain what I mean...

long burrowing animals buried more than halfway are unable to reverse as the tunnels either collapse behind them, or they themselves are blind to it. also think, how difficult is it to reverse a tight corridor as a person?

I strongly dislike the 'pulsing' effect that drilling has now. It makes me feel as if the game is lagging.

WOW! This is actually really cool, and it works (practically)! Now you gotta weaponize it! I can see how this makes a fantastic psychological warfare tool, although in terms of practical firepower it would need work. Get some working guns on this, beef up the structural integrity, and then you can drill your way into anywhere and come out guns blazing! You'd have a terrifying, working death worm. I'd love to take this and work on the concept further myself, but I can't get high enough FPS on planets to play. Might I suggest, though, sticking some 1x1 wheels in the middle of all four long, flat sides of each ring? That way they may be able to roll and slide more smoothly and without damaging the blocks as much. Space balls would also work, and probably even better! Although, with wheels, if they are on rotors, they can be turned on to help pull the body along when it's stuck. The only problem is more complexity, and more chances to blow up. Plus, the rotors and wheels might replace too many metal blocks in the ring then. I'd also try out a heavy armor variant. Lastly, those thrusters are burning up the blocks on the rings behind them. You should increase the distance, or the worm may eventually burn itself into pieces and break. Thrusters in reverse on the heads may also help.

+Robbin_ted99 I keep thinking of the Scrin centipede walker thing (idkr the exact name) from C&C 3, except it slithers instead of walks and, of course, burrows into the ground and pops out to attack. It would be the ultimate psychological weapon, and a damn good actual one too. Now if only we could figure out a way to drop them in from space... Then we can rain death worms all over the enemy base that fall in shooting from the heavens and burrow into the ground popping in and out to eat the base away!

Really surprising how well that works. Unlike a rover you have more control over tunneling underground (which is really an issue and often ends in your vehicle getting stuck into a hole that ends up to steep) And unlike a ship you don't need to constantly use energy to levitate It would just need some wheels on the outside to prevent damage and add a bit more forwards power to it

I think a good addon to it would be some kind of retractable railing or pincer on both ends to grip on to surfaces when the need arises, and to protect the drill when it is going under such circumstances that it would break.

Maybe the way to go would be not to pull it out the way you came, but to dig a shallow climb forward when you,re done mining. You'd end up with some sort of u-shaped tunnel. Using the alternate drilling mode in order to get back out should make the process faster and maybe easier (some tests should be made on that subject)

This is bloody genius. Well done Arron. I don't think it really needs any major modifications to get it out of the ground though. Perhaps if you tried digging a bit deeper, such that the whole worm was below ground, and then incline it upwards at about 15 degrees. You could then engage your peristaltic-movement thingy to take you out. Just a thought idk. Post it so I can test!

Yeah that was the first thing that came to my mind too Blueshadow125, the worm would split apart into sections as soon as u moved a few meters... but the concept is really cool, if you could make it out of some vanadium tungsten titanium alloy that is practicly indestructible. i dont know if its possible to use spaceballs or something to create a lower friction shell on the outside. I really wish Keen house would add hover blocks, which will hover above any surface depending on how much power you supply the hover block, with a maximum of maybe 10 meters above the ground, at 150 KW.

Unusually brilliant. If the connectors can pass ore, I would create a script that transfers the ore to different sections of the ship on demand (assuming the ship isn't full). This may help when trying to climb or drill. The additional mass right behind the drill heads of the ore may be the culprit of why the drills snap. If that mass was moved to the rear, you may have better luck. When exiting, you'll want the mass shifted to the middle of the worm, so that the head can exit. As each rib levels off on to the terrain, ore should be shifted to the emerged sections making it easier to pull the back end out since the mass is lower.
