The Blacksmith is a small assault carrier designed to deliver 10 Rapiers to inter-planetary targets or via orbital insertion and with a rotatable and direct controllable rear engine setup that rotates to allow better atmospheric and space handling. Sadly, and as usual for SE, not without its flaws however..

Lets run down combat fleet classifications for space engineers Fighter: small ship, used for harassing and dogfighting Bombers/capital killers: small ship, large amount of rockets and small turret Interceptor: small ship, one job, take out fighters and bombers Corvette/Gunboat: Small ship gone large, glass cannon, immense firepower but is also agile Cruiser:Small ship gone wild/large ship, designed to escort capitals or perform covert strikes Destroyer: large ship, the first true capital, designed to destroy capitals, but not smaller ships Frigate/fighter hunter: can be used in capital combat, but is designed to hunt small craft and prevent exector events Light carrier/Assault Carrier: small carrier, designed to be in combat instead of sitting behind the fleet e.g the blacksmith BattleCruiser: the smallest kind of frontline combat ship, designed to get hit and give it back Battleship: the main ship of fleets, designed to be capable of surviving major hits, and destroying several ships before it is destroyed or disabled Battlestar:Large ship, the combined abilities of a battleship and carrier Carrier: Large ship, designed to launch fighter and craft like that Dreadnought: large ship, super capital class, you'll need many ships or Luke sky walker to take this down Super carrier: ITS A CAPITAL THAT CAN LAUNCH OTHER CAPITALS!! Emperor Doge I would think it would go something more like this: Drone/Scout Ship: Recon and light combat. Light Fighter: Cheap and maneuverable fighter meant to combat other fighters. Multirole Fighter: Cheaper and smaller than heavy fighters, but more useful then other craft. Heavy Fighter/Strike Fighter: Expensive, meant to combats other fighters and some larger ships. Interceptor: Made to destroy smaller craft, and target high speed fighters. Blockade Runner/Runabout: Fast, meant to out run larger ships and fighters. Maybe used for interception. Figate: Small ships, meant to protect larger ships form flanking attack. They can also operate separately. Destroyer: Carries more firepower than frigates, used to escort larger ships. Cruiser: Lighter armor, but just as well armed as many craft . . . and can vary in role greatly. Battleship: Well armored, well armored, and slow. Capital Ship: Extremely large ships or flagships. Transport: Any ship meant for transport.

Bullshit, there is basically small grid or large grid military vessel that is either carrier oriented (and this often dont have any practical use) or regular gunners, there is nothing else in "practical" category. Your cringey classification cant even precise anything.

Also its definitely not "official" classification of sci-fi crafts as it don't exist, its RL classification of aircrafts/ships slapped into space engineers.

W4sted, what I'm willing to bet is it has something to do with the Aerodynamic Wings on the Rapier causing that insane maneuvering, have you tested it with just one or two Rapiers see if the effect lessens? Seems odd that it would even apply in space, But i'm guessing the connectors might be causing such issues.

Now you need two ships that it is deployed alongside: a heavy attack/defense ship called the Hammer, and a repair vessel called the Anvil.

I'm keen to make 3 factions, 2 that I build, and one that's from the community :) So hell yeah, hit it up on the Steam group.. that faction already has 2 good entires, let's see it grow :)

I'm sure there'll be a LOT of it later on, and probably already someone said it... But you need to lock Rapiers down with landing gears. It's the only way to avoid the multigrid issues.

The only mod allowed is Digi's aerodynamics mod and the goal is to make something that is clearly visually distinct from the Yellow and Red teams (Glaive/Gladius vs Broadsword & Rapier) while still being fairly comparable function wise, so similar number of guns/thrusters etc.. goal is to make a 3 faction system that are all fun to fight with ala Planetside :)

Loved it! Very aesthetically pleasing, and has an effective and excellent combat role. 4 out of 5 stars!! Only thing keeping that 5th star would be the functionality in space engineers itself, meaning we never know when rotors are going to go crazy. Especially under fire...

It has got to be the wings! They must somehow space engineers itself. Also you can just turn off the front thrusters to keep going without holding the W key.

Totally love your builds and have been a sub for years. You are the reason I have 996 hours into SE. It might be the connectors. I have noticed on airtight hangar door set to open on a sensor and have ships docked and connected, well outside the senor range when moving the mothership, they open.

I tryed to do a carrier design for team deathmatch in survival some time ago, it was easily 4 times as big and 10 times shittier, that is one beautifull ship, great work.

lol, can't wait to see more of these, I always did like your 'Build a Fleet' series. On that note, this has got me thinking of going back into SE and attempting to return to a project I meant to work on. I was thinking of building some of the classic Battlestar Galactica cylon ships in Space Engineers, never got around to finishing it (started with the classic Cylon Raider) but now I'm thinking that might be a fun little build for me to attempt to do. I don't think I'll be able to build a Cylon Basestar to scale like in the show, but I will try to make it big.

I would suggest that you dock the Rapiers upside down and place a walkway beneath each one. For full immersion you could set up a gravity generator to create a zone of low or null gravity beneath the fighters for boarding and repair.

My, this ship looks phenomenal. I hope someday that the game is bug-free enough and servers stable enough to allow massive fleet operations involving ships like this, because I can only imagine how awesome it would be to see a few of these jump in, scramble fighters, and cause some serious hurt.

You should make a HUGE flying hangar. Literally just a huge hanger with jump drives, six hydrogen thrusters (one in each direction) an eight atmoshperic and ion thrusters on each side. this would be a yellow team carrier, which specializes in longer engagements while red with the rapiers specialize in quick egagements in which the enemy has not time to sustain a defense, while yellow slowly deteriorates the enemy because of it's sustain capabilities.

The naming theme kinda made itself with this one tbh :) Having been naming things after weapons, the carrier being called the Blacksmith made sense tbh! The Yellow teams will be 'the Armourer' I think for some symmetry :)

Nice outtakes at the end. XD Also, the ship looks awesome! Great idea. Too bad SE had to just kinda' throw it in the toilet a bit with that bug. No idea man. Wish I knew. I guess if the Rapiers are atmosphere only you would go in with the Black Smith after they had handled the threat, pick them up and head back out to space. I'm sure, as this is only a support craft, you would also have Frigates, Destroyers and others that this ship would, just as the name says, support. Can't wait to see what you come up with for Frigates, Destroyers and such, if you haven't already done so.

you should take the main structure and hull of the blacksmith make boarding ramps on the bottom and make it into a landing craft. it could hold a lot of people but you know how space engineers freaks out when you have too many people but it would still be cool and you could call it: The M.I.L.C (Mechanized infantry landing craft) or have a lot of ED 209 inside. That be awesome

Very nice build but I have a question, how will you dock the rapiers again? While manuvering to connect themselves they would have to be in a horizontal position and they can only hover in a vertical one.

If you have a gaming keyboard you can configure a key to be a 'W' toggle type thing, so that would also be an alternative to holding / turning off dampeners. Anyway, fantastic ship, kinda getting me in the mood to play again with all this talk of survival-readyness. I fancy playing in my Jade Hub again and RP Firefly. :P

I think that it is the wing mod on the rapiers. The wings still work even in space and when they are inside a ship.

After you've built the second carrier, you need to build proper capital ships in order to be able to take down the carriers.

i think the vtol part was astonishing, i wonder what other things you could do with that function, like maybe you could get a layer of shields and (if you want) small guns so its mainly protective, then switcharoo to better weapons but less armor, i dont know i havent played the game. just theorising

Wasted, maybe the "connector bug" is actually an aerodynamic wings bug? You could test it with modless fighters to check if this is the case.

I think I have an idea for the speed turn. maybe when you are turning the rappers are actually moving incredibly fast so the game counts their speed as higher. then it realises that they are part of a grid (the check might be later in the code) and just adds that speed to the grid? dunno if that might be it but it makes sense to me. ace vid and ship by the way but yeah we need a set of ships like anvil and hammer and stuff

Idea: A large fighter capable of both space and planetary travel, that can carry two fighters that are meant specifically for space, and two specifically for planets. I think it would be nice to have these for a fleet for really quick strikes on a fleet or a base. It of course would need a larger ship to carry it around while it isn't doing a strike. idk I just think it'd be cool to have a whole fighter wing connected to one larger fighter.

That rear engine rotation is sexy as hell! BUT, you should really use a "-" after Black. Otherwise it says Black Smith Instead of Blacksmith. Really nice otherwise! Maybe install the Shield mod and use the 1-block airlock gates.

I know i'm going to be wrong, but i'll put my idea out there anyway. Maybe the large ships is being considered as a small ship grid because of the rapiers connected to it, and the massive amount of thrust or something is making a larger impact on it since it could be considered a small ship grid. Eh, IDK.

Maybe the engine is calculating the change for each of the Rapiers and compounding it with the actual change on top of that, so it might be fixed in a later build.

I love the rotating thruster design I never would have thought of it myself. You you accidentally locked the thrusters at the weird angle 45° for each set of thrusters off the spine of the ship, I was wondering if that would be a viable option for an actual build? I know you wouldn't get optimum efficiency from the thrusters but it seems like an interesting (if not useless) design.

could it have anything to do with the gyros on the small ships changing your flight characteristics when they dock up? They're rather small, but each one could contribute a small amount.

I know this comment is late as all hell but I really wished you stored the fighters facing downwards and sitting sideways due to there slim style you cold hold a lot more but its a sexy build.I wish I had a computer so I could play space engineers ill just have to wait until it releases on xbox.

How do you land rapiers in it? Rapiers can only stop vertically if I recall, and this seems to have no way to pick them up from that position.

Easy fix to the front thruster issues. Just make them a group and turn them off when you don't need them.

This is true, it could be creating some form of lift/upward thrust, something like the same effect you get with those high speed banking turns. Good call ManlkWeet!

I'm thinking of using this. Been deciding on a fleet design for ages. Through From the Depths, I have found visual looks. And I like the compact functional designs as well. The Blacksmith design appeals more than The Armourer.

Cool idea but I see why it flies funk. You have lots of mixed grids confusing the center of mass/center of thrust.

It's probably something like the centre of mass of the ship with all of the ships attached together is different from the ship grid with the gyros on it, meaning it's interpreting the turn as movement. Just my two cents.

I always shut off all the thrusters and gyros when a small ship is docked onto a large one. Otherwise they'll fight each other. I've also seen really weird things with some of the docked ships in the last week or so. - not that I've not seen anything weird about them in over 2 years of development time in the game. NOM

NightOwlModeler They're still different grids, which leads to a different center of mass, compared to the center of rotation.

No, Keen "supposedly" changed the grids to lock into one grid now when attached by Landing Gears and Connectors. Although this has had "bugs" it would seem since they introduced it. Just tonight, I had my large ship twice when connected to another large ship with no thrusters or gyro just launch itself spinning and desync jittering. (I was in SP game mode). So there's certainly something not right in the "Stable Branch" right now. There are problems it seems whenever a grid is re-rendered and also (historically) when it crosses the 10km spacial grids as well. Sometimes the space grids are crossed in rapid succession as a ship clips through the corners of several in a short time. NOM

Hey W4sted, did you try turning gyros on the small ships off? I'd be willing to bet you anything that the gyros are just overcompensating for the motion of the ship.

While it is capable of atmospheric flight, in survival you'd have to make sure it's well stocked with ice given all of the hydro thrusters

the reason you were going 100 m/s was because when you turned so did the rapiers so it added your velocity plus all the rapiers to either equal 100 m/s or over the limit. why is this happening well because space engineers just fucks up some times lol.

It's the wing mod. I tested some of them and ships with out Aerodynamic Wings mod worked.

i won't even try to say how angled this ship would have to be for the back thrust to keep it stable without another folding down engine at the front unless there is TONS of weight at the front... im'm just rambling :P nice ship mate.

nice build, was wondering when you where gonna make a carrier variant of this... o and it looks a bit like the top of a anvil imo... btw maybe using some landing gears to lock the fighters in place instead of using the connectors might solve your issue temporarily

The jump drive in the cockpit can be a bit concerning, if the critical jump drive mod is to be used.
