Dashing reporter Doug Richards, then at WAGA-TV Atlanta, gets up close and personal with the mysterious creative team behind "Space Ghost Coast To Coast" in this segment for their 10PM newscast. George Lowe (the voice of SG) and Mike Lazzo (the Exec Producer) make appearances. Also in the writers room are Clay Croker (Zorak voice and animator, RIP) Dave Willis, Matt Harrigan, and Andy Merrill. The too-talkative editor (yours truly) is seen at the $500k state-of-the-art Ampex analog edit console, now obsolete junk, alas. The apparently overworked Channel 5 staff, bless their hearts, super'd my name as Tim Roche and not Tom Roche. I've sought coping mechanisms ever since.

It’s insane how analog the editing technology was! They just invented the show’s animation/compositing process with what they had. I always assumed it was done with early editing software.

Looks like It could be a quantel paintbox computer system, which would be the grandfather to modern animation and video edit software. One system probably cost as much as Ted Turner paid for the entirety of his movie and cartoon library. A quarter to half a million dollars

I remember listening to the commentary tracks and how they said it was all analog effects, nothing done digitally. I understood the concept, they didn't use modern editing software, but I didn't realize how the analog technology operated. It's amazing when you finally see what they did, using the tools available despite any limitations they still managed to create an animation style and presentation that many of adult swims shows imitated.

I'm rewatching the DVDs with the commentary going and remember Tom said on one of them that the eps he worked on had the snow going in the background, and how fitting that in was especially challenging. It's cool how people working on low budget shows like this and MST3K really went the extra mile anyway, they were proud of their work and it holds up to this day. Cut cut cut! 🔪

Most of the reused animations come from these episodes: ▪Zorak ▪The Lizard Slavers ▪The Web ▪Creature King ▪The Energy Monster ▪Nightmare Planet ▪Homing Device ▪The Robot Master ▪Space Sargasso ▪The Schemer ▪Lokar - King of the Killer Locusts ▪The Challenge ▪The Deadly Trap ▪The Molten Monsters of Moltar That's all I remember and/or caught wind of. 3:27 That tape he’s holding is a 90-minute Betacam SP tape. Those kinds of tapes were used for professional video production, broadcasting, and archiving, and they were still used well into the 2010s and a little bit in the early 2020s along with Digital Betacam or DigiBeta and HDCAM which existed around the same time in the 90s. Nowadays everything is more so stored on digital video files, hard drives, cloud severs, or Video Discs/DVDs.

There were a few methods they used for the guest interviews. I don't remember what order they tried these methods, but I remember some included: -A normal style of interview, either with the interviewer in the same room or outside over an intercom. -The person conducting the interview would dress up like Space Ghost and be in the same room as the guest (I think this method was quickly dropped because it was hard for the guests to stop laughing or something) -They used cut-outs of the characters positioned in the interview room so if the guest wanted to interact with a specific character they knew where to turn their heads. If you want I believe there are some raw interviews uploaded to youtube, just search: Space Ghost raw interview

George is retired. He isn't doing any consistent voice work anymore. Clay passed away. I'm sure Andy would be down but he can't do it alone. The other thing is WB doesn't want to do anything with their old shows anymore, and are on a bloodbath of budget cuts. Even their biggest AS Hit, ATHF couldn't get more than a 5 episode run in 2023 and that was from some extra money they found in the budget. It was basically a one time favor.

When the emphasis is on the focus of the channel the pronunciation is different than if its perceived as a “name,” imo. Back in the day a lot of channels with a specific focus or connected to a brand (the Disney Channel, the *insert* News, the Shopping Channel) used to be pronounced with emphasis on the descriptor. But now they’re more ubiquitous and pronounced as if they’re a single proper noun You can compare the old commercial breaks to now and see this; “You’re watching *the* Disney Channel” vs “You’re watching Disney Channel” or “You’re watching *the* Cartoon Network” vs “Right here on Cartoon Network”
