I just stumbled across your video....my father, Colonel Walter L. Moore, Jr, was the USAF Program Director for the X-20 Dyna-Soar program. Thank you for, in your own way, promoting the knowledge and memory of an incredible program. Although I never discussed the program with my father, through my mother, I learned that it was certainly the biggest thrill, challenge and disappointment of his military career. Needless to say, Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara was never a very popular name in our family. A year after my fathers passing, I went on to work on the Shuttle program, beginning a 30 year career. My biggest regret was not being able to share the thrill of the X-20 successor with him.

I'd very much enjoy seeing both of you discuss a comparison of DynaSoar/X20 to Mig.105/Spiral. Granted; Mig.105 had a slightly different purpose and tasking to that of DynaSoar, but the two vehicles were both designed as atmospheric-return to ground landing 'runway' manned craft. The use of the Skylancer prototype by Armstrong was an innovative and effective repurposing of an aircraft that closely replicated the swept-delta configuration of DynaSoar. Kind and Respectful Regards, Amy and Scott, Uyraell, NZ.

@winged7 жыл бұрын
It's rated only for X-15 like reentry (2000m/s) when reetering the atmosphere, your speed(3300 m/s - 22:30 ) was waay too big for this cockpit.
@TheReaverOfDarkness7 жыл бұрын
It was designed for re-entry on Kerbin. With default KSP re-entry settings on RSS, you get way hotter than in Kerbin re-entry and even hotter than in real life Earth re-entry. This is because if the atmospheric heating were realistic, you could brute-force a Kerbin re-entry with any decent capsule and have no need for any heat shielding at all.
@winged7 жыл бұрын
No, it has RO config which means it's adjusted to RSS. As I mentioned earlier it's rated only for very gentle reentries - no faster than 2000-2500 m/s when reentering the atmosphere.

@Benaplus17 жыл бұрын
Scott, you're using the wrong config on those LR87s. You're using the AJ-3 RP-1/LOX config rather than the AJ-7 Aerozine50/N204 config. The latter gives a lot more thrust and specific impulse. If you had used that with a stretched tank, you probably could have reached LEO without SRBs.

Watching this made me think about how slender our heat shielding layers have become when compared to say some of the bulky alternatives on the market... I mean, in principle this may have been imagined in the 1960s but I mean, given some of the variable flight challenges you are facing or that would be faced... we are almost at a point where something like this is even imaginably practicable... I think I was tweeting to you about how I watched some video about space planes and the guy was talking about dream chaser and I mean... the tiles it uses are still pretty thick...
