this intro... this intro is still the most unsettling and terrifying intro/cutscene in any game I've ever played and/or watched. from the expertly used detail of brief yet overly detailed movement, to the excellent usage of shadow and the manipulation of where your attention should be, only to surprise you with a genestealer that came out of seemingly nowhere. it's amazing. I can't stress at how GODLY the shadowing is for A PIXELATED GAME, the extreme detail of everything from the floor, armor, genestealers, faces, lighting, and much more. I could make a whole essay about just this 1 minute and 42 second scene. IT IS THAT GODLY and has still yet to be matched by any other game in my opinion. i remember playing this when i was extremely little, and this was the only game to give me uneasiness, fear, despair, and pure shock. too bad i never could beat this game.

I may have spent more time watching the intro, than playing the game itself ... It was like a very very (too) short movie, with basically everything I loved lol. Difficulty was too high in my opinion, especialy with guns «glitches». As if the xenos swarm weren't hard enough to contain, you'd have to deal with deficient weaponry. Not mentioning the so called «super heavy» terminator armours, spliting open in one hit lol
@theironpill92964 жыл бұрын
You're entirely on point with your analysis. I can say personally i've never ever played this game but watching the short cinematic i'm blown away by a feeling which is hard to describe... A sense of being inside the game world and accompanying these marines on their brave yet doomed mission into the darkness of the terrifying space hulk. It's just incomparable to what any modern video game does for me.

I remember only realising a few levels in that you got those rank indications (feathers I think?) If your squad member survived. Cue playing game obsessively for months to clear it with no deaths. The number of times it was weapon jam and then Aaaah! I lost track of. Great game:)

@@soylentgreenb PCs were not considered a joke in 93, what nonsense. VGA graphics and soundblaster music was standard by then. I had an Amiga 500 in the late 80s and loved it, but by 92/93 PCs were just better and the A1200 was sadly too little too late.
@soylentgreenb4 жыл бұрын
@@pforson 1992-1993 is right at the beginning when PC was starting to be taken seriously. Go back 2 years and PC had choppy scrolling CGA cyan and magenta horror or EGA with internal speaker audio; it was a boring business machine that was 4 times as expensive and much less capable than an amiga. The big four were Ultima underworld, Ultima VII, Wolfenstein 3D and especially Doom that got PC taken seriously as a gaming machine. I don't think you remember 1992 so well. There existed 486DX2-66's but they were extraordinarily expensive and only became affordable after the pentium had already been launched. There existed special purpose MIDI hardware (predecessor actually) like the MT32, but it was not seriously entertained for gaming audio. There existed OPL2 adlib cards, but almost nothing used them and what used them used them poorly. There existed tandy PC clones with sort of NES level sound well back in the 80's that barely anyone knew existed. The machines in the $1000 or so price range were 286's (yes, still in the early 90's) and AM 386DX40's well into 1992-1993. The AM 386DX40 is a very important CPU; it's the first cheap, mainstream CPU on PC that sold by the millions that was fast enough in software to do what the amiga could do in hardware.
@pforson4 жыл бұрын
soylentgreenb I remember 1992 pretty well actually, as it was the year we upgraded from our Amiga 500 to a 486sx25 pc. It came with a Soundblaster card and VGA graphics which were a definite step up from the Amiga (VGA was actually introduced in 1987 and by 90/91 was pretty standard). It was certainly more expensive than an Amiga, but still affordable (I think we paid about £900, but it also came with a monitor). I totally concur that in the late 80s the Amiga was way better but by 92 the PC had overtaken it. A few months later in Feb 93 X-Wing came out and the 3D graphics were so incredible I never looked back. I do find it somewhat odd that you decided to cite Space Hulk as an example of how the PC was apparently a „joke“ in 93 - the PC intro is fully animated and with full speech and clearly superior to the static still frame Amiga version (which music one prefers is purely subjective). Don‘t get me wrong, some games were better on the Amiga (Cannon Fodder for example), but Space Hulk was better on PC. (As an aside, I actually have an MT-32! If you visit my channel you‘ll see that I even uploaded some MT-32 videos! - although it was about 8 years ago.)

Space Hulk and Star Wars: X-Wing were the first Windows-era DOS games I ever played (though to be fair, my older brother didn't think I was ready for them). I was blown away, and I don't mean with a Storm Bolter; everything was completely different from the Tandy 1000 we'd been using until then. I miss those days, though I don't miss the nightmares. I remember being stuck on a specific mission for more than 15 years before I finally beat it. It was a late-campaign mission where you had to retrieve a specific item; I explored most of that level and never found it. It wasn't until someone finally posted an online guide that I discovered that the item in question was surrounded by spawn points, where I normally didn't DARE to go. After I finally finished that, the remainder of the game was a cakewalk.
