Japan's Space One Kairos rocket exploded shortly after launch on its inaugural trip on Wednesday (March 13) as the firm tried to become the first Japanese company to put a satellite in orbit.
The 18 metre (59 ft), four-stage solid-fuel rocket exploded seconds after lifting off just after 11:01 a.m. (0201 GMT), leaving behind a large loud of smoke and a fire near the launch pad on the tip of Kii peninsula in western Japan.
Kairos carried an experimental government satellite that can temporarily replace intelligence satellites currently in orbit if they fall offline.

Still amazes me that we humans supposedly had rocket launches down pat back in the 60s, but suddenly now, it's like we're on the struggle bus.

There's always been a statistically small, but significant failure rate with rockets. The failures are 100% catastrophic and spectacular.

@@darko714 Just funny that here we are, like 60 years later, with cell phones that are more powerful than the "computers" back then, and we still can't figure it out. At least we have another billion or so years to go before the Earth becomes uninhabitable due to the sun. Although, I'm sure we'll wipe ourselves out long before that.

@@captainkirk4271 Sure, and we're still struggling to put people on the moon again, even though we did it over and over 60 years ago. Very odd. Now, a country is lucky to get an unmanned lander there, and that's if their rocket doesn't explode. All this fancy tech and it's still so tough. Strange....

The explosion looks to have originated above the second stage. Since this is a solid fuel rocket, it almost appears that a destruct command was issued.

I was thinking about that too. Seemed like there was a little wiggle just before the explosion in the rocket's ascent.

From other footage I think the first stage blew it's "lid", which might be accident or self destruct.

How hard would it be to hack the self-destruct feature of a rocket? Considering the payload would be exactly what China wouldn't want in orbit in the midst of its territorial land grabs.

I studied this video thoroughly. The explosion was caused by excessive pressure not being contained sufficiently to promote upward thrust.

Sometimes what goes up, may not always stay up and comes back down hard. It was almost like the rocket was saying "I'm not quite ready for this"

Maybe the flight termination system went off, question is why? Could be anything, excessive shaking, loss of telemetry.

@@RedAndYellacuddlyFella Actually not unrealistic, Roscosmos used to have a manually triggered FTS. An old launch hade the rocket tumble out of control, and after falling back down for several seconds, they finally pulled the trigger.

Even in a culture as engineering and precision enriched as Japan, making successful rocket launches is tough. Tough for the US in the 1950s and 60s, tough for Musk, now tough for Japan. Reminiscent of President Kennedy's famous statement "We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."

Zero actually. Its an aluminum-ammonium perchlorate solid rocket fuel. There is no CO2 released. Aluminum oxide, aluminum chloride, water vapor and nitrogen gas are the only byproducts released.
