I used to love this show as a kid. The fact that a holographic entity could transport earthlings across space and grant them astounding powers, but somehow still needed a maintenance robot, kind of passed me by.

I used to watch this after school on BBC1. I'm struck by how esoteric the stories for children's television could be, drawing liberally upon mythology and sci-fi. Not only American shows but in the UK we had series such as The Tomorrow People, Children of the Stones, The Changes and so many others. The music by Yvette Blais and Jeff Michael (aka jazz musician/producer Ray Ellis and Filmation's Norm Prescott) is truly remarkable - talk about advanced harmony!

Part of NBC's Saturday Morning schedule for the 1977-1978 season. That was the first animated cartoon from Filmation to feature an all diversity cast. Yes, Isis was a SOUL SISTER!!!

Many centuries ago, three carefully-selected young earthlings were transported from their native lands to my faraway world. Here they were granted astounding powers, and eternal youth, then returned to Earth. Their mission to watch over the human race, helping the Good in it to survive and flourish. In the course of history, their names have become legend: Hercules, empowered with the strength of a hundred men; Astrea, able to assume any living form; (and) Mercury, the amazing athlete who can match the speed of light. Working together with me, Sentinel One, and my maintenance robot, MO. These teenage guardians form the greatest team the world has ever known: The Space Sentinels

Why did these 70s shows always feel the need to add a quirky little character as "comic relief"? This one has Mo; there's 7-Zark-7 in Battle of the Planets and I wish I could forget Bat-Mite and Scrappy Doo.
@tombstoneharrystudios5842 жыл бұрын
Largely to add exposition…though in the case of 7 Zark 7, they did it because the original source material was much more adult and violent They’d work round edits with that robot

Who made the intro music?
@Grendelkhan10012 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed the series, starting when it was The Young Sentinels (hence the Y motif on their belts). Like most Filmation things it was hardly original, as it aped DC's Green Lantern Corp (which aped EE Smith's Lensmen). Still, decent show, apart from the typical lame jokes.
@bobbybickert Жыл бұрын
I'm surprised that you and I are the only ones who made comments about the show's original title. (I wonder if they changed it to Space Sentinels because of the popularity of Star Wars?) They only changed the opening titles. They didn't change dialogue in the show like "Here come the Young Sentinels.".

Tarzan, Battle of the Planets and Space Sentinels. You couldn't get a better bunch of kids cartoons growing up and with all the Looney Tunes, Tom and jerry too. Now look at what we've got. A bunch of cry baby liberal lefties who'd baulk at the thought of watching something so "ancient" and "out of touch". They just don't make these cartoons like the used to do they?!.
@namelessjedi22422 жыл бұрын
Yeah, today those darned liberals might want to make a cartoon with a black female lead or an Asian included for representation!
