Has anyone else wondered just how bad a situation the commander or pilot could have rescued the shuttle from? The approaches/HAC were mostly controlled by the orbiters computers and seemed to be a piece of cake to land for them. Granted the 10000’s of hours training would have helped 😂 I’ve always wondered just how much of a bad situation would have still been recoverable. Their skills would probably have been more than the shuttle’s structure could have handled.

Very little because of the narrow window of survivable operations. Take Challenger, which was technically not destroyed during the SRB/tank disintegration. It actually got a boost and was ripped apart from wind it entered into at the wrong angles. This is why when Challenger was recovered there were absolutely no burn marks..

Done lots of dockings with ISS. Very tedious but interesting. One could also learn about the physics of rocket science. Furthest reach to orbit Jupiter (Time X) Saturn seems to take a life time. Though made VTOL's in Moon and Mars but never succeded to make precision reentry to Earth. Either too shallow or too wide angle. But why is there no proper chute. The addon doesn't work. landing was better then the real one. in the real one the rare landing gears are fist landed to ground but here very soon after front landing gear came down.
