Space Shuttle Enterprise was the first orbiter of the Space Shuttle system. It was built to perform atmospheric test flights after being launched from a modified Boeing 747 and constructed without engines or a functional heat shield. It was originally planned to modify Enterprise so that it would become the second space-rated orbiter. However, during the construction of Space Shuttle Columbia, details of the final design changed, making it simpler and less costly to build Challenger around a body frame that had been built as a test article.
Enterprise was restored and placed on display in 2003 at the Smithsonian's new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia. Following the retirement of the Space Shuttle fleet, Discovery replaced Enterprise at the Udvar-Hazy Center, and Enterprise was transferred to the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City, where it has been on display since July 2012.

After the Challenger disaster in 1986, NASA and Rockwell briefly reconsidered converting Enterprise into a flight orbiter. But it was instead decided to build an entirely new orbiter - Endeavour (OV-105) - from spares and leftover parts from the construction of Discovery and Atlantis. Enterprise was considered - briefly - for use once again after the Columbia disaster in 2003. But it was decided that the Shuttle program would end after the ISS was finished, and Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour were fully capable of doing the job.

when I saw the video of Leonard Nimoy saluting the shuttle enterprise as it headed to the Intrepid museum, he mentioned the roll out and the band playing the theme to Star Trek. I tried to find a video of that for years, now I finally found it.

i would argue that the large hadron collider is mans greatest technological achievement to date. the shuttle at the time was pretty cutting edge. now your phone has more capability, but your phone cant get into orbit! cheers!
