It's a feature from old bay. It's a visual cue you're in pain without the constant message spamming of "My right arm hurts" because I find that obnoxious as hell. Perhaps you could argue this is equally obnoxious but I'll take some pain flashes over constant text spam.

In that case you could go with lower opacity on them? I think players would be able to notice even very slight red flashes (it'd be easier on the eyes too)
