it's diverging your eyes... you're not trying to cross your eyes which involves strain but rather focus on far away object with image near your eyes. Your eyes are still looking straight forward unlike being crossed eye where the eyes move to face each other.

you don't have to cross your eyes!! cover your eyes with your hands so that your right hand covers the right half of the screen, and the left hand is covering te left half of the screen. Then your right eye sees automatically the left picture and your left eye sees the right picture! This is easy and you do not get an headache!

How do you guys do it? I mean, in cross-eyed mode your eyes focus on different halves of the screen which will distort the perspective of the image as the screen plane is no longer perpendicular to your lines of sight, so one's outer edges will appear shorter then the line dividing the images of the stereo pair. Do you use a special projection, or what is seen here is simply two "standard" perspective frames rendered from different viewpoints? Why I ask is because I'm trying to do a cross-eyed mode for a simple 3D app, and everything looks nice unless you try to run it full-screen on a larger monitor, that way the depth is correct and everything, but it becomes hard to focus on small details like texts etc, and everything starts to look a little blurry. I guess the effect I described above can be the cause...
@Gamesforyourmind6 жыл бұрын
I use a program called blender that renders 3D environments. I run a camera through the environment along a path twice, once to the left and once to the right. This is similar to how our eyes are a little to the left and a little to the right of each other. Once I have two videos I can combine them beside eachother. For crossview I put the left view on the right and the right view on the left. To do the same thing using parallel view so the video works in an oculus rift or google cardboard I just kept the left view on the left and the right on the right.
@TheBypasser6 жыл бұрын
I see. So you do not compensate for the screen plane angles, right? After messing with parallax mapping and trying it in stereo, a stray idea came: shouldn't we use a shifted perspective instead of the classic one here, so that it would compensate for the fact we look at the screen at an angle this way?
@TheBypasser6 жыл бұрын
That's it, looks like I figured what's wrong. Indeed, the blurriness is caused by the so-called toe-in stereo. To make things right we have to align the projection planes to the viewer's eyes. I guess most of the rendering software can't do that, so I tried a quick setup roughly based on this idea (do not copy-n-paste the code as it is a real mess, with madness like doing eye offsets via the projection matrix which will kill your lighting as well as any raytracers should you have them - and, surprise, it was not made for cross-eyed stereography anyway, though the core idea remains the same): code.msdn.microsoft.com/windowsapps/Direct3D-111-Simple-Stereo-9b2b61aa/sourcecode?fileId=44821&pathId=1047513358 Indeed, the full-screen image remains perfectly sharp, I even can easily read the small texts and see the fine details of the parallax maps as well, yet of course there is a price to pay: with the shifted axis the resolvable part of the image becomes pretty narrow as the non-resolvable parts cover a very large part of the image. Will probably do more experiments next weekend, maybe there is some way to fight off some more screen size :)
@TheBypasser6 жыл бұрын
Ahh, I spoke too soon. There is virtually no reason for axis-shifting a cross-eyed image as it will simply ease things off rather then truly fix anything (for a price of much of a frame). What I finally did was writing an output mapper shader that distorts every half-image so that it would cancel out the screen plane misalignment - yet, surprise, I won't even bother posting it here as it requires tweaking for every particular setup (probably later for some average case as even not being properly configured it still beats the conventional way - of doing nothing that is :) - if running full-screen on the larger displays).

The images have to be fairly small for that to work for me. It is an unusual way to do it though, but it is less strain on the eye muscles. I experimented with taking xrays of things using 3D but few of my colleagues and students could see it in 3D

I tried it the first time yesterday. Try to move your screen far towards you, only a few cm away from your eyes. Then you will be able to move the pictures to one but it will be blurry. Then try to relax your eyes and maintain that state. Then slowly move the screen away as far as possible without the 3d vision getting apart... Do that a few times and after short time it will work
