You should try get in orbit of the earth while you are in the atmosphere. I managed to do that so you are able to complete the mission.

You can put the landing legs inside the fuel tank and the hawk and Titan engines partially inside the fuel tanks to make it look better. Then, select that part (fuel tank + engine) and move it for part clipping to occur
