The banjo is an instrument that perfectly conveys the feeling of being alone in an uncharted frontier, with its hidden dangers and hidden beauties. Perfectly represented by its "high and lonesome" sound, through which even cheerful music always has a feeling of bitter homesickness.

Some things tap into realities and truths of the human condition. And the truth is, to borrow a phrase, "Space is long and dark and empty, quite a ways 'tween friend and friend..." Frontier music has a certain sound to it, because it resonates with those feelings evoked by frontier living. It's part of why the 'space western' works so much as a style of fiction.

Maybe not chillwave but I think you're onto something else here. Ambient Space Banjo should definitely be a category in its own right. As an eastern Kentucky hillbilly who loves space, I approve. If we ever get to interact with intelligent life from who-knows-where, they must know of the banjo. This is way better than the music in ‘Firefly.’ I always thought that music made it too campy/cheesy - it sounded like royalty free country/bluegrass music. I mean, I know it was a show meant not to be taken too seriously, and it was, certainly, a unique concept. However, honestly, I found that to be quite a frustrating part, of the show - the music. This woulda faired way better, for that show.

@XOChristianaNicole I really like the album version of "Mal's Song", and I may catch hell for it but I still love "The Hero of Canton" lol. Some things throughout history just match each other you know? Like banjos and the country side, blues guitars and the city, bagpipes and reeds for Ireland and Scotland coasts...but I never would've thought a banjo with some reverb could fit the complete emptiness of space so perfectly. If mankind ever does get past the Great Filter and does go to space colonization, it's the Wild West all over again, small people once again in a massive massive unexplored frontier.

Well never thought this is what I needed, but yeah I think this is! No getting around it, once you start colonizing the stars, gonna be some hill folk with a banjo out there.

if anyone is looking for games that capture some of the feel of this music, Hardspace Shipbreaker features this sort of music for background, and Outer Wilds really embodies the "campfire on a distant planet." vibe of this.

I ain't crazy about no AI-made pictures on a good day... but you frail a fair banjo, sir. Can't find no fault in that. Take care out there on the Lanes. 'Verse is a whole nest of crazy these days.

There's just something about banjo music that suits space, something about a place so empty, a frontier that will never truly be tamed, that fits the same sort of aesthetic as the same wild frontiers we associate with the instrument. Places we thought would never be fully explored, a time when the world seemed far far larger. As a wonderfully fun book once said "Space," it says, "is big. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mindbogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space."

I am so glad I clicked on this. I am an avid Dungeon Master who is always looking for new atmospheric and story driven music that can take my sessions to the next level. I have a character in mind to introduce to this music. Buster Divine, the bard whose prowess with the strings garnered him the attention of the Gods. The Gods granted him immortality and a seat during their meetings for him to play. It wasn't until one fateful meeting where the God's conversation turned heinous towards his fellow mortals that he felt the need to speak on their behalf. While they had granted him immortality, God-hood had not been bestowed. In fiery retribution for his outspokenness, he was summarily banished back to the material plane. Only now Buster is cursed to never stop playing his strings. He goes where his power is needed and no where else. He appears to mortals in a time of decision-making. Only when they run the risk of trifling with the gods, to their own peril, will he appear with his strings. Never once stopping his music but seamlessly telling the mortals his story of regret. A larger than average fire accompanies him for the mortals to gaze into. His music contorts the flames into a fantastical display of patterns and colors. Often mortals who gaze into the flames while listening will have visions of what is to come. However, what they see is not always clear. For when the gods are concerned nothing is certain.

I knew the banjo and other "folk" instruments had more range and variability now that there are digital tools, but I didn't expect to enjoy it this much. The theme of space cowboy really hits home as a fun bit to imagine. Its very compelling.

I have to say, my benchmark for that is still the Minecraft soundtrack.
@punmasterS-277

@@MegaSockenschuss minecrafts tracks are piano/keyboard done electronically (and with electronic tones), while snowrunner uses primarily more string instruments + keyboard, all instrumental, and also uses licensed songs (for the gas station radios). both soundtracks have that same feeling of loneliness, mainly because of the rythm and use of minor notes. I always felt string instruments (specifically acoustic guitar, and acoustic bass when played in minor notes paired with keyboard) conveyed a sense of loneliness better than piano/keyboard alone. just my opinion tho, I enjoy snowrunners better because there is much more variety (there are 7-8 different tracks per region (there are over 10 regions) that cycle when playing, gas station tracks--35 of them-- and main menu tracks that also cycle along with special sfx when completing missions/tasks) total track count is something like 150 ish, and it reflects on the region (russian regions will have roots in Russian folk/country music, while American regions have more american folk/country music)
@punmasterS-277
@punmasterS-277 8 ай бұрын
and since this uses primarily a banjo with ambiance, I thought of snowrunner (which uses string instruments) compared to minecraft (which only uses piano/keyboard) the snowrunner ambiance also gives that same loneliness sense that the music from The Last of Us gives.
