I recommend using an external library with the import path set to /import to upload an already exiting photo library. At the moment you cannot delete photos from an external library but if you're not worried about sorting through a photo library and more enamored with searching or sorting them like I am, this can be a easier solution. I appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos!

I had to change the webui port because it was conflicting with something else, for the life of me I couldn't get it to connect. Then after rewatching the instructions for the 4th time. I’ve seen people mention that Cloudflare has something like a 100mb file size limit. Is there anything in the phone app that can be set to chunk files if necessary? Thinking mainly videos taken on your phone.

Great video as usual. Just one thing, I think the wait time in the docker list specifies how long to wait after the container is started, not before. So you'd need to change it on the Postgre docker instead of the Immich docker.

I fought with this for a few hours, I kept getting "Crawling for assets.... No files found, exiting" So I started doing research on immich-go, started the 8 hour process of zipping my files so I could import. Nothing was working, so I pulled up the docker container to double check everything and found that /import has been renamed to /libraries. Changed my command in and it started importing right away. It is really frustrating to have an awesome guide put out, but 4 months later the dev changed something simple and confused me. I love learning all this, but readying a Github page sends me down a rabbit-hole to learn everything I can to do what I want to do. But I never really learn anything, because I have to go 15 pages deep and 7 videos to figure out something as simple as editing a docker container file.... which I never figured out.

Congrats on passing 70k. I am very interested in running this at some point, but I think I'll keep holding off for now. I really want my image hosting to be pain free and reliable because when I decide to go and tackle the monolith of images everywhere, tagging and location fixing... I want it to be good to go for the future as well, regardless of if I end up having to import the library to another program at some point. I do have an N100 mini PC that I'm not really using for anything so maybe I can go get my feet wet with testing some things out on that.

After the update today to immich version 1.100.0 it stopped working. Checked the logs and it was not able to connect to Redis. Not sure if the internal Redis has been deleted or not in this version, but I installed the official Redis container, changed the IP of Redis from "localhost" to the Redis container IP in the immich template/container and then it was back up running :)

You can import photos without using the CLI. You’d instead use the “external libraries” and you’d pick your watch folder and it’ll import them

Thanks as ever for the great tutorial Ed - Immich is fantasic. The image recognition alone is really impressive in my setup. Would be great to see a video about how to backup/restore immich files & db to the array (isay if its on a pool). Perhaps Unraid 7 makes things easier here.. Other thing to note about Immich is that the user profiles do separate libraries and whilst you can share, you wont be able to share the library, some features (eg people’s names) arent shared at the moment. As a result my family uses a single admin user, which isnt ideal but gives us the solution we want.

Hello! I just started using unraid a few months ago. As a new user your videos are very informative. Thank you for all your hard work. My main goal of using unraid is to have a way to stop paying monthly fees for additional cloud storage for photos from my phone company. I do not need to access/store photos while I am away from home. Is it necessary to pay for a domain in order to use immich? My plan is to have the photos and videos on the phones of my family members save to my unraid server when they connect to the home wifi. Not including the cost of the server hardware, is there a way to back up my photos to immich in a way that is free or as cheap as possible yet secure? I am trying to escape monthly/yearly fees. There is, just go to Administration, then External Libraries. Add external library and the path you want to use is /import (to align with the import folder created in the setup above). This will simply add all those photos and videos to the metadata and not import the actual photos/library.

Any important data you should always have multiple copies. In more than one location IMO. Imagine that all your photos were only on your server and one day you came home and someone had broken in and stolen your compters? But of course i pray that never happens to you :)

So I already have Immich up and running but my server situation has now changed. I currently have Immich setup to look at an external hard drive as an external library, and also all my Immich photos are being uploaded to the same external hdd. I have since upgraded my server and now want to migrate my Immich library into the server’s external library. Can I just drag and drop the directory onto a new Immich share and update the file location in the template? I have a query to you. I have an unraid server with 64gb non-ECC ram and xeon 10core cpu. I stored around 15tb photos on there. I'm using a really easy method to upload from my old server or from unraid itself, I map a drive on my laptop to the old repo of pics create an album in the album, click upload then select From my Computer navigate to the mapped drive and select all the photos in click go! super easy! and fast since I'm on the same network

so when u mean by upload/copy, are you referring to symlinks? or a copy of the full file meaning you are storing double of the same pic on the same machine? which is it?

When you upload a file to Immich it makes a copy of that file into the location where Immich stores its pictures. So yes if you still had the pictures in the source you would now have 2 copies. It doesnt use harlinking or symlinks. However if you want it just to see the photos you have and not use it to upload photos etc. You can add an external library and Immich will be able to see that. So maybe you would prefer using the external library option as opposed to using Immich's primary "upload" library.

They just released a new version of the docker container which contains version 2.1.0 of the CLI. Unraid didn't show it, but force update updated the container to the new version :)

Hi thank you for all the helpful tutorial videos you post. You've enabled me to build an Unraid server to host many self hosted apps! I was looking the other day for some help with Immich and a tutorial on the process to backup and restore, specifically backup Server A and restore on Server B? (Migrating to a new server) Would you be willing to assist or create a tutorial video on the process to do so for Unraid users? I'm using the standard PostgreSQL_Immich and Immich containers for the deployment. Much appreciated!

Just wondering, how do you think this (Immich) will handle a library of over 250,000 raw images? Also...gpu info?

No problem based on users having 200k-500k photos.

As an example I have 90k mixed media files and it runs beautifully. You may want to limit the cores for immich though as it took 3 days to process the library and it will take all the resources available to it.

Thanks for the video. I installed the immich docker on my unraid server and after I was done I got a popup message saying something along the line of "The password you just used has been identified in a data breah and Google recommends you change it. My guess is that it was related to the default postgres password and I assume that won't matter since it is safe on our server but I did want to ask here to make sure that it isn't something else I should be concerned with. Thanks.

I have been adding through the gui, I did this on one computer and it was working fine. when I did a install on another server I seen that there was a update and everything seem to work the same but now it will not load any of my .jpg photos installing from the gui, only my raw photos. It acted like it was uploading the .jpg files but all the icons for the photo said couldnt load. (using latest unraid, latest immich following your directions up to logging into immich where I just uploaded with gui. I am at a loss and open to any suggestions.

So, I'm able to get past the installation of the immich docker (originally, I was getting stuck because the default port 8080 was already in use so I've changed this and can see it visible in the volume mappings). What I can't do is actually log into the IP:PORT (Chrome on my phone and PC gives me the "this site can't be reached ERR_CONNECTION_FAILED" message). Any ideas on what I'm missing here? I've tried disabling firewall on the PC and tried connecting via my phone on the wifi network but nothing doing. Thanks!

Tried following these instructions, but it said it couldn't connect to the server when I try to open immich. Going to delete both containers and then retry from the beginning. GOt photoprism to work, but need multiple users so I thought this might be better.

So? I have an existing unraid photo share (750 gigs)......can I not simply point Immich to that folder and use Immich? Unless I am missing something I have to create another share and have Immich basically duplicate my existing photo share?

That was my question, too. It seems like you can point to an external library, but you cannot manage/delete photos using external directories.

I installed Immich, following your instructions. Thanks. However, it seems that Immich doesn't let the cache drive rest. I can hear the drive move about once per second for just a moment. After stopping the immich docker, the cache drive stops. After starting it, the drive chirps about once per second. Any idea how to stop it from doing this?

If you just uploaded a bunch of pictures chances are the different jobs are still running (Thumbnails, Smart Search, Face Detection, etc). This would probably cause the cache drive to run. Click administration and then jobs and see if anything is running.
